Witnesses Heard Fatal Shot, Saw White Van Driving Away
Man Killed At Gas Station Near Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. --
Authorities said witnesses saw a white van with two people inside leaving the scene of a fatal shooting at a gas station along Interstate 95 near Fredericksburg, Va. It happened shortly before 10 a.m. on Friday morning.
"We heard the shot and so we looked right away and we saw the white Astro van. It has like a ladder on top of it and it took off," said Raja Abilmoa, the owner of a nearby business. "We heard the noise and saw the van in the same second."
Maj. Howard Smith, of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Department, also said all leaves have been canceled and his deputies will be working 16-hour shifts.
Meanwhile, Harold Scott of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, said evidence recovered at the scene was sent to a lab for analysis.
Bruce Bingham works at a gas station across the street from the Exxon station in Spotsylvania County, Va., where a man was shot this morning. Bingham said he heard a shot, turned to look, then saw a white, unmarked van.
"We heard a single shot and it sounded like it came from that general direction across the street," said Bingham.
Other witnesses said they saw a white Chevrolet Astro van heading north on Route 1 just after the shooting. Police are stopping white vans traveling in the area.
The shooting victim, described by authorities as a black male, died at Mary Washington Hospital.
The shooting happened at the Four Mile Fork Exxon gas station. It is located at Route 1 and Interstate 95 in Fredericksburg. They reported that a woman called police and said her husband had been shot.
Virginia State Police spokesperson Lucy Caldwell told News4 a state trooper was about one-tenth of a mile away when the shooting occurred and actually heard the gunshot. She said the trooper was on the scene within seconds.
"We are looking for a white van or anything that looks suspicious," said Officer Joe Hersey of the Fairfax County Police Department. Officers from Fairfax fanned out on foot at the Springfield, Va., interchange, the so-called mixing bowl area of the Capital Beltway causing some traffic congestion. Lt. John Crawford of the Alexandria Police Department told News4 as many police officers as possible were deployed to look for the white van.
There has been no confirmation that this latest shooting incident is related to the recent string of sniper shootings that has left seven people dead and two wounded.
