Canadian Bank Refuses Services to Group Opposing Homosexuality
By Fred Jackson August 15, 2002
(AgapePress) - A report says a major Canadian bank is refusing to open an account for a group that opposes homosexuality. Americans who do business with the banks U.S. affiliates are also being alerted.
Montreal will be the site of the International Gay Games in 2006. According to Family News In Focus, five conservative groups decided to form a committee to oppose the event. But when they went to the Royal Bank of Canada to open an account, it refused, charging them with violating that country's Human Rights Act.
Gwen Landolt is national vice-president of REAL Women of Canada, one of the groups opposing the Gay Games. She says their goal was to simply alert people to the possible dangers of the games, including the promotion of homosexuality and an increase in the incidence of AIDS. Landolt says that is simply expressing an opinion -- a freedom protected by Canada's Charter of Rights.
She says a complaint has been filed with the Canadian Human Rights Commission, but she is not expecting a favorable reaction. That is the commission that recently came out in support of same-sex "marriages."
In addition, she says Americans should be aware that the Royal Bank has many subsidiaries in the Unites States -- Barclay's Bank PLC, Centura Banks, RBC Dain Rauscher, Eagle Bancshares, Business Men's Assurance Company of America, RBC Builder Finance, RBC Liberty Insurance, and RBC Mortgage and Prism Mortgage.
Landolt suggests that Canadians and Americans who do business with the Royal and its U.S. affiliates consider taking action to protest the Royal's action.
