James 5:13-20
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit. Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

The theme of this passage is prayer and, more specifically, how it relates to individual and corporate (communal or shared) healing. Prayer should saturate every Christian’s life, both during the good times as well as the bad. Unfortunately it appears that Christians tend to cry out to God in prayer primarily during times of difficulty, while they are quick to forget God during times of ease and plenty. Christians are admonished to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)—which means to pray every time an opportunity presents itself and to be in a constant attitude of dependence upon God.
Then He spoke . . . that men always ought to pray and not lose heart. (Luke 18:1)
Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man. (Luke 21:36)
Rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer. (Romans 12:12)
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. (Ephesians 6:18)
Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving. (Colossians 4:2)
But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers.

In regards to healing, this passage is controversial among commentators. Before looking at it in detail it would be helpful to review what the Bible teaches about sickness and healing. A comprehensive treatment of this subject is found in the Believer’s Bible Commentary by William MacDonald. It is presented in its entirety here, as follows.
Divine Healing
1Christians agree that all sickness is, in a general way, the result of sin in the world. If sin had never entered, there would be no sickness.
2Sometimes sickness is a “direct” result of sin in a person’s life. In 1 Corinthians 11:30, we read of certain Corinthians who were sick because they participated in the Lord’s Supper without judging sin in their lives, that is, without confessing and forsaking it.
3 Not all sickness is a direct result of sin in a person’s life. Job was sick in spite of the fact that he was a most righteous man (Job 1:8). The man born blind was not suffering for sins he had committed (John 9:2, 3). Epaphroditus was sick because of his tireless activity in the work of the Lord (Phil. 2:30). Gaius was spiritually healthy but apparently physically unwell (3 Jn. v. 2).
4 Sometimes sickness is a result of satanic activity. It was Satan who caused Job’s body to be covered with boils (Job 2:7). It was Satan who crippled the woman in Luke 13:10-17 so that she was bent double, unable to straighten herself up: “This woman . . . whom Satan has bound—think of it—for eighteen years” (13:16). Paul had a physical infirmity caused by Satan. He called it “a thorn in the flesh . . . a messenger of Satan to buffet me” (2 Cor. 12:7).
5 God can and does heal. In a very real sense, “all” healing is divine. One of the names of God in the OT is “Jehovah-Ropheka”—“the Lord who heals you” (Ex. 15:26). We should acknowledge God in every case of healing. It is clear from the Bible that God uses different means in healing. Sometimes He heals through natural bodily processes. He has placed within the human body tremendous powers of recuperation. Doctors know that most complaints are better by morning. Sometimes He heals through medicines. Paul advised Timothy, for instance, to “use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities” (1 Tim. 5:23). Sometimes He heals through “deliverance from underlying fears, resentments, self-preoccupations, and guilts, all of which produce illness.” Sometimes He heals through physicians and surgeons. Jesus explicitly taught that sick people need a physician (Matt. 9:12). Paul spoke of Luke as “the beloved physician” (Col 4:14), which certainly recognizes the need of doctors among Christians. God uses doctors in the ministry of healing. As Pare, the famous French surgeon said, “The surgeon dresses the wound; God heals it.”
6 But God also heals miraculously. The Gospels contain many illustrations of this. It would be incorrect to say that God generally heals in this way, but neither should we say that He never does. There is nothing in the Bible to discourage us from believing that God can heal miraculously today.
7 Yet we must also be clear that it is not always God’s will to heal. Paul left Trophimus sick at Miletus (2 Tim 4:20). The Lord did not heal Paul of his thorn in the flesh (2 Cor. 12:7-10). If it were always God’s will to heal, some would never grow old or die!
8 God has not promised to heal in every case; therefore, healing is not something we can demand from Him. In Philippians 2:27, healing is spoken of as a mercy, not something which we have a right to expect.
9 While it is true in a general sense that healing is in the “Atonement,” yet not all the blessings that are in the Atonement have been given to us yet. For instance, the redemption of the body was included in Christ’s work for us, but we will not receive it until Christ comes for His saints (Rom 8:23). At that time we will also be completely and finally healed of all diseases.
10 It is not true that failure to be healed indicates a lack of faith. If it were, this would mean that some would live on indefinitely; but no one does. Paul, Trophimus, and Gaius were not healed, and yet their faith was virile and active.
In returning to the passage it is important that the interpretation, not only be within the context of all that the Bible teaches about divine healing (above), but also within the context of the passage. The context of this passage has to do with confession of sins and the restoration of a wayward (some use the designation “backsliding”) believer. The context implies that the healing promised by God is for a person whose sickness is a result of sin, and who confesses the sin to the elders.
If these were the only verses in the Bible on healing, we would assume that a Christian could be assured of healing from every illness that comes in life, if he met the conditions listed. However, we have already seen from other Scriptures that it is not always God’s will to heal. Therefore we are forced to the conclusion that James is not talking about “every” kind of illness, but only about a certain form of sickness, that is, a sickness which is the result of certain specific circumstances. The key to understanding the passage is found in the words “And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” Healing in this section is connected with the forgiveness of sins.

The question, “Is anyone among you sick?” most likely refers to a person who has committed sin involving the “testimony of the local church,” and is therefore stricken with an illness due to the sin. God is chastening him in order to bring him back into fellowship. The solution for such “public” sin is for him to confess the sin, in accordance with the principles of 1 John 1:9 and James 5:16, to God and to the elders of the local assembly. They in turn are to “pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” And James emphasizes that such prayer must be one of faith, because “the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.”
The guidance to “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” is, when taken in context, refers to believers within the local assembly (church) who sin against each other, such as by tearing them down with unruly gossip or fraudulent personal dealings. In such a case it is the responsibility of the erring Christian to admit (confess) the sin he has committed to the Christian who has been harmed by such behavior. In turn, the one harmed has the responsibility, in accordance with the principle of 1 John 1:9, to forgive and then to pray for his brother—and act, if genuine, of verification that he truly has forgiven him. Additionally, such prayer, if exercised fervently according to James, will have dramatic results—just as in the days of Elijah (who was subject to the same weaknesses and infirmities as other men).
Verse 19 describes a Christian brother who has wandered away from the truth, either in doctrine or in practice. Another brother makes this a matter of fervent, believing prayer, and thus lovingly turns him back to fellowship with God and with his brothers and sisters in Christ. How immense is the significance of this ministry! First of all, he will save his erring brother from dying prematurely under the chastening hand of God. Secondly, he will cover a multitude of sins. The Book of James comes to a close focused on divine good, which may only stem from a living faith. This epistle has expressed faith, which is tested by the problems of life, by unholy temptations and by obedience to the Word of God. The reality of a living faith, that which comes by living in accordance with the perfect law of liberty (the filling of the Holy Spirit) is seen in godly speech, is accompanied by true wisdom and is evidenced in practical godliness. Living faith shuns a harsh and critical spirit, it avoids the self-confidence that leaves God out of life’s plans, it is unselfish when it earns and spends money, and it manifests fortitude and endurance in view of the Lord’s sure return. In sickness it looks for the spiritual causes; and, by confession to God and to those who have been wronged, it removes them. Finally, a living faith goes out in love and compassion to those who have drifted from the spiritual path; and, in loving kindness, helps errant brothers and sisters to return to a full fellowship with God.

God is our healer. God cures our diseases.
Surely He has borne our griefs (sicknesses, weaknesses, and distresses) and carried our sorrows and pains [of punishment], yet we [ignorantly] considered Him stricken, smitten, and afflicted by God [as if with leprosy]. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole.

As we seek to follow His commands (which are exemplified by Christ as walking in love) and to obey His voice (as expressed in the written word) we will see His deliverance operating in our lives.
Then he said, " I am the LORD your God, and I cure your diseases. If you obey me by doing right and by following my laws and teachings, I won't punish you with the diseases I sent on the Egyptians."

How Much Do You Really Trust God?

These very words kept echoing in my head all last week...
The night before I heard the news about possible open heart surgery for my dad, I was in service at my church. At this point my family had only heard the news of the “stent” operation.
I was worried...and could not think!!! What would my mom do if my dad died, would she be okay? Was it God’s plan to take him home this week? Worship started...I was completely broken...crying, reaching out my hands and on my knees. I then received a vision as I was singing.
I saw a clear picture of the arteries that were blocked...and my vocal chords...singing “Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, our God reigns!” Every time I sang, the power of the sound was literally breaking the blockage apart. As I was singing I could taste the salt of my own tears...God told me to keep singing it...LOUD...and I did!
Was this a message from God?
I then received more bad news the next day...the news of the possible OPEN HEART SURGERY.
My dad, faced with the fact that he might be dealing with possible death, just to survive...and that he would have to get “sawed” open to reach his heart to stop the blockage--was scared. He told my mom that if he had to have heart surgery, he would rather die.
I did not want to hear that! My dad’s fearful thought and request left me in a panic---but mostly FEAR.
The doctor’s report was not good, the blockage was bigger than they had originally thought, and he was being prepped for the worst. There was a strong spirit of gloom and anxiety....worry....but mostly real sadness.
I was sad because the time that I wanted to spend with my dad might not happen like I had thought it would. Those special talks, and things that I needed to say, I might not have a chance to EVER express to him. If the operation did not go well, or if he could not recover from it (it was a very high chance) I would possibly lose him on this physical earth forever.
I was not ready for that! It just did not seem fair!!! (Oh come on, like you haven’t thought this in your life ever)
You are saying to me...“Annie where was your faith?”
I DO have faith! But the problem was the saying “goodbye” part. Sometimes we just do not want to let go, even though we know we will see our friends or loved ones again someday.
But I had something really good going for me. The vision that God gave me the night before. This gave me a revelation. I needed to TRUST God! After all, He had already showed me the outcome!
So I decided to believe all the way...and not let FEAR have a root in my thought. I decided to trust God--no matter what it “looked” like! I just KNEW God would pull through. I recited scripture to myself and reminded God of the promise He had given me...if He could give King Hezekiah an additional 15 years on his life, I was POSITIVE that he could do the same for my dad!
I then proceeded to tell the story of the King to my dad, and how King Hezekiah REMINDED God of the good deeds he had done, and how God gave him a longer life. My dad was very quiet. I told him that he was just like King Hezekiah...that it didn’t matter what mistakes he had made in his life, if he believed in Jesus and reminded God of the change he had made in his life, God would grant a longer life it to him!
After praying for him and telling him how much I loved him (in tears) I knew that I needed to line up my faith by my actions, so I contacted my church, my dad’s church, my spiritual mom, wrote a blog on my space (prayer chain) and started interceding ALL day for my dad.
This was crucial! The doctors were getting ready to make their decision--but there was one last test that they decided to perform...in the very last minute!
We all waited around the phone, anxious to hear the results! The docs put a camera inside my dad’s main artery to look at the blockages to find out what direction they would take in “open heart surgery”
Was it a coincidence that they decided to check one last time? Hmmm.
Do you want to know how good our GOD is???
The doctors said, “We don’t understand, it is MUCH smaller than we thought--we can put two stents in after all—WITH NO OPEN HEART SURGERY.”
WOW. Talk about a victory dance!!! I was so happy, my family...EVERYONE that knows my dad! I then told my dad that I had everyone praying for him. He started to cry...he even said that I shouldn’t have done it. That it wasn’t necessary!
Oh, BUT IT WAS!
Because look what God did! And how He showed off to me, my family, but mostly to my dad!
God showed up...made a miracle happen...through PRAYER.
TRUST! I want you all to get something--The love of Christ and the power of prayer should never be under rated! I truly believe that my dad had a complete miracle because we were all praying for him with true hearts!!!
So I ask you...how much do YOU trust God?
If you were faced with similar circumstances...worse or better...what would you do? Would you REALLY trust God and not waiver in your faith--one bit?
I thought I trusted God before this happened. But when it came right down to it...I was questioning Him. How you ask? I gave into fear and panic for a short time...and even though the outcome was good...I should still have never gave the devil an inch. Because the night before the surgery...I did not sleep!
What have I learned from all of this???
To put my faith and trust in ACTION...by choosing to believe EVEN when the odds are against me in the natural!
Also, that death is nearer to us than we think...that our loved ones, WE are mortal, and we will ALL die physically one day. Yes we will see each other again if all believe in Jesus...but it might not be for a very long time!
I think that we forget this. I think we take for granted just how special our gift of life is on the earth...and we tend to go about life as if we will never have to face heartache and pain of losing someone close to us. My sister died at 31 when I was 27. Her death was tragic...because I never had the chance to say good bye.
Make sure that you tell the people in your life just how much they mean to you!!!
Also make sure when you are facing a “storm” in your life, trust that God is willing and able to rescue you out of it through the power of prayer and singing!!!
I want to dedicate this blog to all the people that interceded and prayed for my dad. I am going to print out all the prayers for him, and give it to him--I told him and my mom about how many my space prayers went up for him and they couldn’t believe it!
Thank you all so much for your prayers! Thank you for reading my blog and request...but mostly THANK YOU for all of your love! You were all part of a miracle of extended life in my dad to keep living!
How is my dad doing? He is HAPPY to say the least! He has been given a “second chance” !
He is doing great and is finally at home recovering from the operation of “stents”. He will be part of a new exercise and eating program from the facility that my mom works at to help heal his heart. Please keep praying for continued healing and also a re-newed strength in belief in God and what He can do if he just believes.
ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD!

So many people have written about sickness and disease in their families. John 10:10 tells us that satan comes to kill, to steal, and to destroy. But, praise God that Jesus came that we might have and enjoy life in abundance... to the full... until it overflows!
If you have been challenged with health problems, then you can take hold of the word of God and see Him work in your life.
Dodie Osteen, mother of Pastor Joel Osteen, was diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer years ago. She read a number of healing scriptures three times a day and God miraculously healed her. She is still alive, still serving the Lord... still sitting in Lakewood Church week after week, watching her baby boy pastor such a large congregation.

Receiving the Promises
Father, Your divine power has given me all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called me by glory and virtue. I receive Your exceedingly great and precious promises that through these I may be a partaker of the divine nature. In the name of Jesus, I give cheerfully as I purpose in my heart. God Answers Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, I come into your presence with thanksgiving. It is by fearful and glorious things [that terrify the wicked but make me sing praises] that you answer my prayers in righteousness (rightness and justice).
You are the God of my salvation.

Releasing Cares
In the name of Jesus, I cast all my anxiety on God, my Father, because He cares for me.
I am self-controlled and alert. The devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. By the power of the Holy Spirit, I resist him, standing firm in the faith...
And the God of all grace, who called me to His eternal glory in Christ, after I have suffered a little while, will Himself restore me and make me strong, firm and steadfast. Thank you, Father, in the name that is above all names.
6-7 So be content with who you are, and don't put on airs. God's strong hand is on you; he'll promote you at the right time. Live carefree before God; he is most careful with you. He Gets the Last Word8-11 Keep a cool head. Stay alert. The Devil is poised to pounce, and would like nothing better than to catch you napping. Keep your guard up. You're not the only ones plunged into these hard times. It's the same with Christians all over the world. So keep a firm grip on the faith. The suffering won't last forever. It won't be long before this generous God who has great plans for us in Christ—eternal and glorious plans they are!—will have you put together and on your feet for good. Don’t Give Up...
If you haven't fully stepped into God's promises for your life, don't give up! God can do in one day what man can not accomplish in a life time.
Put your focus on the promises that God has spoken over your life and fully expect them to be realized. Remember that the Bible says that He is able to do "...exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us..." (Ephesians 3:20). In other words, nothing is too difficult for God!
So remember to keep His promises for your life in your heart and in your mind. Renew your mind on a daily basis with His Word. Speak His Word out loud. Remember that "Death and life are in the power of the tongue..." (Proverbs 18:21).
My desire Lord is for people to see You in me… may I reflect your love and grace and mercy… may I be more like You Lord everyday with a heart of compassion… You are the reason I live and breathe…
Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

We all remember that passage from The Pater Noster.
Give us day by day our daily bread.
Luke 11:3 [KJV]
This request is most often interpreted as asking God to provide us with food... to satisfy our mouths with good things (Psalm 103:5) and to save us from starvation. That is true. But let us consider it from another perspective.
21And going away from there, Jesus withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22And behold, a woman who was a Canaanite from that district came out and, with a [loud, troublesomely urgent] cry, begged, Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is miserably and distressingly and cruelly possessed by a demon! 23But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, Send her away, for she is crying out after us. 24He answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 25But she came and, kneeling, worshiped Him and kept praying, Lord, help me! 26And He answered, It is not right (proper, becoming, or fair) to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs. 27She said, Yes, Lord, yet even the little pups (little whelps) eat the crumbs that fall from their [young] masters' table. 28Then Jesus answered her, O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you wish. And her daughter was cured from that moment.
Matthew 15:21-28 [AMP]
In verse 26, Jesus told the woman that healing was the children’s bread. Aren’t you glad to be a child of the Living God? Aren’t you glad that God satisfies your mouth with good things?
Who satisfies your mouth [your necessity and desire at your personal age and situation] with good so that your youth, renewed, is like the eagle's [strong, overcoming, soaring]!
Psalm 103:5 [AMP]
You open Your hand and satisfy every living thing with favor.
Psalm 145:16 [AMP]
As a child of God through the reconciling sacrifice of Jesus Christ, trust Him to satisfy you with your daily bread... and what accompanies that bread. Perhaps that might include the communion elements that you take as you make a commitment to walk in faith, believing God for your healing.
"But you—you serve your God and he'll bless your food and your water. I'll get rid of the sickness among you; there won't be any miscarriages nor barren women in your land. I'll make sure you live full and complete lives.
Exodus 23:25-26 [MESSAGE]
