Which commandments are these that we as bornagain Christians should walk in, that it may go well with us?

love, Eden

The answer is also in 1John: 1John 3:23 "And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment."

The old commandment: "Love your neighbor as yourself" was trumped by the new commandment John 13:34 "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another."

The first commandment was given under the law. And the law was designed to preserve the people through whom Christ would come (Gal. 3:19). Loving a neighbor as you love yourself assumed that you would preserve your own life and that you would not want harm to come to your own person. So, when you loved a neighbor in this way you sought to preserve his life and treat him fairly. Under the Mosaic law, a law that functioned to preserve the people through whom Christ would come, this commandment was key. Actually, it summarized quite nicely the intent of the law.

Now, however, we are not under the Mosaic Law but under the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus. Under this law there is no need to preserve yourself, the Seed has already arisen. Also, even if your body should die you will live forever. Our placement within the person of Christ preserves our lives for eternity.

But Jesus gave this command "love one another as I have loved you" prior to His death on the cross. So, this is not necessarily about dieing for one another (although it was the destiny of Jesus to do so). The way Jesus loved us was that He gave His life solely to the Father for His use. This was evidenced by His baptism with John (He became a "living sacrifice" washed in water by the son of a priest) and was so complete that He could say "When you see Me you see the Father." When we present our own lives as living sacrifices then as we live the life of the Lord Jesus Christ will be shown.

Now, if you keep the royal law "Love your neighbor as yourself" you do well (James 2:8) but if you keep the greater law of liberty "Love one another as I have loved you" all will know that you are a disciple of Christ (John 13:35).

I provided you with a list at your request almost a year ago. To the best of my knowledge,

1. You never read it
2. It includes every commandment in the New Testament (KJV)

I think most of us can benefit from reading it every now and then. One of the things that it says is to avoid unlearned questions. (2 Tim. 2:23)

If one includes the so-called sermon on the mount, there are many commandments to read, in many places of the New Testament.

Basically I think Jesus is saying, "Walk not only in reactive love but also in proactive love towards God and towards your neighbor, and you'll be fine". We should not only avoid things, but also actively help things.

The answer has not changed since the last time you asked.

Okay ... since His commands are not burdensome, what are they? If they are not burdensome, they must be pretty easy, right? So, what are His commands that are not burdensome, Carol Swenson? Can you put them in a little list for me?

Which commandments should we keep when the Bible says, "I will bless you if you walk in My commandments"?

Deuteronomy 4:40
You shall keep therefore His statutes and His commandments, which I command you this day, that it may go well with you.

1 John 5:3
For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not grievous.

John 14:15
If you love Me, keep My commandments.

Which commandments are these that we as bornagain Christians should walk in, that it may go well with us?
