This is not new. Man's veering off God's course in the name of tradition or of misinterpretation of God's word.

The monarchy in Judaism was not God's plan (1 Samuel 8) but he conceded to deal with Israel through it from that point on.

The same was true with the building of the Jewish Temple. He gave Moses instructions how to build the tent of meeting (Hebrews 8:5) but no such command or provision was made for the stone dead temple of Solomon.

2 Samuel 7:12-13 (NIV)
12 When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.
13 He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

Zechariah 6:12-13 (NIV)
12 Tell him this is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD.
13 It is he who will build the temple of the LORD, and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.’

The Lord Jesus the Messiah was the one coming from the line of David that God meant in 2 Samuel 7:12-13. And the temple was not to be of dead stones but of living stones...

1 Peter 2:3-9 (NIV)
3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him—
5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6 For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”
7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone,”
8 and, “A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

1 Corinthians 3:16 (NIV)
16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?

All the hype and hubbub from David and Solomon were their misinterpretations and ended up in yet another concession of God to deal with Israel through that system from then on... he later instructed them to REbuild the temple under Zerubbabel... so that system would stand as a sign that the Messiah had come in Jesus' day when for nearly 2000 years the temple sacrificial system has been abated since they rejected him.

So we in the church are no alone in our errors.

God is the Lord of precision. He does not ballpark his facts and figures.

Even here at Christian Message Boards BBS we often weary ourselves debating or arguing traditions and interpretations long held because, well they were long held and that's the way the "Church" has always done it...

SUN DAY worship for example. A few debatable passages refer to the first day of the week as a time of assembly (debatable because the reasons may have nothing to do with the "Lord's Day" as some claim or of a resurrection that can be show to have happened on Saturday Night {talk about the real Saturday Night Live!} [Smile]

But the Shanghai-er of the faith (Contantine, Emperor of Rome) was a sun god worshiper. And it was under his auspices and influence that the Sabbath was alleged to have been changed to SUN DAY.

Interesting.

I am not advocating a masse return to Saturday worship days but to the Sabbath of the believer on everyday of the week under this covenant and since we are all to be priests that means Shabbat is a work day for us to serve the Lord... having of course a day off per week cycle to rest and care for our human shell...
