Hi Bob and Michael, I agree with you both. In my bible there is a footnote for Matthew 3:1,2; 4:17 and it is titled "Repentance". This is what it states............
The first call of the kingdom is to repentance. The implications of biblical repentance are threefold: 1) renunciation and reversal, 2) submission and teachability, and 3)continual shapeability. There is no birth into the kingdom without hearing the call to salvation, renouncing one's sin, and turning from sin towards Christ the Savior (Acts 3:19).
There is no growth in the kingdom without obedience to Jesus' commandments and a childlike responsiveness as a disciple of Jesus, yielding to the teaching of Gods Word (James 1:21-25)
There is no lifelong increase of fruit as a citizen of the kingdom without a willingness to accept the Holy Spirits correction and guidance. END.
In my opinion, a lack of genuine Holy Spirit activity evidenced in the church would be more tightly associated with our lack of cooperation with God than with Gods unwillingness to dispense.

Fer sure! one 'n', you know this, so it goes without saying, that if one does not repent of his sins, he is not saved. At the very least, when one surrenders to Christ, he or she, knowing he (or) is powerless in the matter, nevertheless does accept that as a condition - by faith. Isn't it blessed! So it is not as though one surrenders without repentence, which would amount to one's simply 'acknowledging' that Jesus died for his or her sins. There is QUITE a difference! ! !

"Repentence" is "surrendering" to the will of God, but this not a one-time decision but an on-going activity that is a part of God's dynamic work of "santification" in the life of each sinner whom he has redeemed. As an on-going activity it is cooperating" with God to allow him to do his transforming work. As Paul says, "we are God's workmanship" (Eph 2:10), and "repentence" is the redeemed sinners cooperative activity in that work. For a fully description of this process see my statement on "God's work of redemption" on my website: http://christianityetc.org/redemption.php

Is surrendering to the will of God a necessary component of saving faith? If it is not, I would suppose that an individual could say "thank you God for forgiving my sins" , but go on living his life however he may desire. In one of my bible dictionaries it states that saving faith involves consent of the volition (will) to the assent of the understanding. In another one of my bible dictionaries it appears that "surrendering to the will of God" could fall under what is involved in repentance. Take a look at this definition found in the Laymans Bible Dictionary.............
REPENTANCE. The act of turning from sin and changing one's orientation from rebellion against God to acceptance of God's will and lordship.END
What do you think?
