The blood of Jesus was for forgiveness of our past sins. When we have faith in that statement by God, we are justified and we are saved and we will receive a glorified body and have eternal life.

So now our past sins are forgiven and we rejoice in that, but soon we discover that there is an Adamic sin nature in us which likes to sin in attitudes and actions, and that, in Adam, we are constituted sinners, or have become sinners like Adam, where a real character change occurred with a bent to sin.

I may try not to show my temper, but some days my temper shows up. I may try to be loving to so and so, but in my mind I am saying something negative about that person, and so on, we are sinners in Adam.

So I have peace with God through the blood of Christ, but I soon discover that I don’t have peace with myself and that there is big trouble within, I find a sin principle within me which likes to sin without my permission.

Did God ignore this problem? Perhaps God did not KNOW about this problem? Of course God knows and God dealt, not just with my sins past, but also with my “sin principle within” or with “my old man”.

God says in:

Romans 6:6:
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

And also in:

1 Corinthians 1:30
But of Him are you in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.

Note above that God has put us in Christ. This is not just some theological doctrine. When Abraham gave tithes to Melchizedek, the tribes of Israel were not born yet out of the loins of Abraham, so, being yet in the loins of Abraham, Israel, or the eventual seed of Abraham, gave tithes to Melchizedek.

Likewise, when God “put us in Christ”, Christ’s seed was not born yet, but whatever happened to Christ happened to us because God had divinely “put us in Christ.”

As Paul put it:

2 Corinthians 5:14
For the love of Christ constrains us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead.

And as Romans 6:3 puts it:

Romans 6:3
Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death?

Jesus did not just go to the cross to shed His blood for the remission of our sins; Jesus also went to the cross so that God could put us in Christ on the cross:

1 Corinthians 1:30
But of Him are you in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.

It is NOT that we TRY to crucify our wicked self; it is that God has already PUT US IN CHRIST and crucified us with Christ:

Romans 6:6:
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Just as I received remission of sins by believing that when God said that Jesus died for my sins, that God was telling the truth, and by faith in God’s Word, I received remission for sins past:

Romans 3:25
Whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are PAST, through the forbearance of God.

But then we discover that there is trouble within too. God dealt with THAT old man by crucifying my old man, my sin principle, with Christ on the cross, BECAUSE GOD SAID SO.

And just as I believed for my remission of sin, a Christian’s work is only half-done until he believes also that God crucified him WITH CHRIST because God said so.

And once we see that God has crucified us, we realized that this crucifixion is NOT in the future, but happened at the same time as Christ was crucified.

Now I know that my sins are forgiven by the blood, and my sin nature is killed/died with Christ on the cross and is dead.

But since God put me in Christ, I also rose into newness of life. Now the Holy Spirit counsels me, and whatever comes out of me now that is newness of life, it shall be counted unto me for reward.

But my past sins are forgiven by believing in the shed blood, and my sin nature is dealt with by believing that God has already crucified my sin nature with Christ. That Christ was on the cross for TWO THINGS: for remission of sins and so that my sin nature could be crucified on the cross:

Romans 3:25
Whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

Romans 6:4
Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Two things happened at the cross. Not just one. And both must be believed in separately.

Be blessed,
Eden
