You know I have always thought lurking was a word of negative connotation, but it must be a bulletin board coloquial language kind of word too, because I was surprised to hear a number of people use it to describe themselves. Still, you are right and it might not be prudent that I used it openly as some might see it as negative. I will correct it and use visiting, that is a better choice.

thank you, that was interesting. If I may make one comment, you wrote
quote:
It was funny because as I was going through this and making notes it occured to me that what I was seeing was not so much what people want to read about or what interests them, but what motivates them to come out from lurking and say something.
I do not think it is helpful to call people who are "visiting" this site as "lurking", since the word "lurking" has a negative, evil connotation. If I were shy or whatever and the site I hoped to get some relief from called me a "lurker" or said I was "lurking", I do not think that would help my feelings one bit.

From Cambridge dictionary:

Definition
lurk = to wait or move in a secret way so that you cannot be seen, especially because you are about to attack someone or do something wrong.

but other than that, thanks again for the post, HFHS.

God bless, BORN AGAIN [Cross]

Well, BA, I did look through some of the emails that I have from emailing people back who have written in and also some of the threads that I personally archived to PDF files when I stopped moderating and without too much research here are some more things I received comments on; and just to be sure that no one who is a regular poster thinks that I am speaking of them, these are all references to comments that were not made by any regular posters, but by folks that either had joined and never posted or joined and maybe only ever posted once or twice.

In addition to the ones I spoke of in the first post above, there were notes of general thanks to the board for some of the posts that were in support of Israel and for that one post of mine personally that had the maps and the history; I have had notes from some of the discussions on homosexuality and porn, from folks looking for more resources or help; I have had at least two notes that come to mind from people struggling with the PDL issue in their churches; I have had notes on some of the treads on depression; and probably a handful on women's issues relating to marriage and sexuality; forgiveness; adultry, divorce, etc; I had one note from someone who had struggled with persecution from church members for having health issues; I personally wrote a thread on curses once that I got a note of thanks about; I have had at least a couple of notes asking for more tolerance by the powers that be on discussing issues like Hell vs anhiliation - these I actually believed were from some who had been banned and come back with other names; I have received notes of praise for posting the truth regarding some of the things that I have posted against Islam; and I have had both praise and damnation for some of the things I have personally posted on Catholicism; Some of the Bible study threads that have brought comments... the one on Judas, some of the ones on eternal security, some of the ones on parables and on covenant.... most of these seem to be "I had not thought of this this way.." or "I was blessed by this thread"; I have had comments on some of the OT studies that Art used to post; A few on some of the Homeschool news I used to post. Some of the Chuck Brogden (sp?) sermons that David has posted have brought thanks that blessed me comments. Some of the rapture studies... I seem to remember on that I believe FavorMinded did on pre-trib and another that I am not sure who started, but that examined the various views both brought comments of "I dont feel comfortable enough expressing myself to post, but I just want to say thanks." Les's thread after the death of Wendy brought a comment from someone who was blessed by the brotherly love on this board. I have received comments on the news that RIPP used to post so much of a well, both from some who thought it was depressing and some who were glad to see it as they would not have known about these things. I have also received requests for more information or help on witnessing to someone who was in or helping someone get out of JW, Mormonism, Isalm, Occultism and the PD/MegaChurch/pragamatic church movement.

It was funny because as I was going through this and making notes it occured to me that what I was seeing was not so much what people want to read about or what interests them, but what motivates them to come out from just visiting and say something.

I think that if I were to try and analyze that I would say ....

1. At any given time there are people here who are struggling with some personal issue in their walk, and are afraid, ashamed, shy, feeling alone and like they are the only ones with this problem or struggle and they are looking for help or encouragement, or to feel that they are not alone in their struggle, and when they read something that either gives them this or leads them to think that you might be able to direct them to what will give them this... they write either to say thanks or to ask for more help.

2. There are some who really enjoy the studies but are not comfortable with their own knowledge enough to participate and they will write to say thanks.

3. There are people who write just because they are encouraged with what they see as grace, love spiritual fruit in the posters or disappointed in what they see as a lack there of and they will write to tell you their thoughts on that.

4. There are some that are seeking help in dealing with their own sense of something is not right in their church and are looking for information to confirm or deny their fears, thoughts, concerns, convictions, and they will write on that.

5. There are some that write not to comment on any one particular thread but to encourage those who they see as being in the midst of a spiritual battle.

6. There are some who are looking for specific information on specific topics of apologetics because they are witnessing to someone or someoen in thier life is involved in a cult or apostasy or somehow misguided and they will write when they find help with that or think from reading that you might be able to direct them to the answers they seek.

So, I see that I can summerize the kinds of comments, but not the threads... the threads are too varied.

I will see what I can pull together for you BA.

I may have some that came in email as opposed to PM form; I archived onto CD a hoard of email files off my computer last year and so I am not sure what is there. We work via internet and so I took 2 cd's worth of stuff off my machine.

I dont think that I would post the actual email as they were personal, but I surely can share some of the threads that I received them on.

There really has been a variety of subjects. I can tell you that I have received email on some of the kinds of threads that you used to post where you presented an Christian idea that is commonly questioned in the world. ughh I cant think of the specific one right now... but one of those questions that an athiest or agnostic might ask; I can think of two such emails that came on topics like that, one was where a person was struggling with this question in their own mind, and a second where the person was dealing with the question in witnessing and the post provided the answer that they needed to respond. I will look and see if I can find the threads, they may have been your threads.

I remember one on a thread that Dale posted on headcovering and I received an email or PM and I am not sure which, but it was from a husband who had been struggling in his home feeling that the Lord was leading him to talk with his wife about covering. This thread had helped them work out their own ... what is the word... their own unsureness about things.

There was one that suprised me, because it was my own thread and it had been written almost a year prior to this correspondence, but this person had been reading old posts and ran across a post that I wrote on submission and wrote to me because she had been struggling in her marriage and realized after reading that thread that she was not walking the walk that she should be walking and she wrote to thank me for posting.

Most all of them have been very personal ways that God gave answer to a personal situation the writer was dealing with, but not all. Some were just to say thank you for allowing these things to be discussed, or thank you for having the courage to post the unpopular truth.

But I will try and see if I dont have some more concrete examples of the actual threads that I received comments on. It may take some time, and I know some of them were lost this past month when our hardrive was filled and david had to delete the oldest 2 years or year and a half of posts, but I will gather for you what I can.

sister helpforhomeschoolers, in another Topic you said that while you were Moderator, you received many (I believe you said "many"), emails from readers who did not necessarily post.

Can you share the gist of some of those emails with us so that those of us who regularly create Topics and write reply posts can get a better sense of what the CBBS's readers are saying or thinking, without naming anyone, of course? I think it would be very encouraging, if the news is good, of course.

thank you. BORN AGAIN
