No it is not necessary, but note these facts. It is hard for a child to survive and to grow up to maturity without a "family". It is hard to be a "student" by yourself. A twig won't make much of a fire by itself, but join it with several others and it can be part of a blaze. One strand of string isn't very strong, but twist it together with several others, and you get a cord.
