There was no 'rule' that said they had to sell that land and give the money to The Lord. They could have either not sold it, or even sold it but kept all the money for themselves. The problem came when they thought more about impressing others by selling the land and telling everyone they sold it for such-and-such amount but keeping the difference of the real sell price.
