Hi Nan29: That is also a good question. Happy is a very subjective thing. What is happy for you and what is happy for me may be two very different things. One person may feel that a happy marriage includes pornography or extra marital relationships. This of course would not be the will of Jesus. Another might feel a happy marriage is where the wife is head of the home etc..

God and thus Christ would want us to have a marriage that reflects the scriptural vision of marriage because that reflects our realtionship with Christ.

So... He wills us to have a marriage in which both people are believers.

He wills us to have a marriage where Christ is the head of the husband and the husband the head of the wife and the two are become one before God.

He wills that the wife honor the husband and the husband love the wife as Christ loves the church.

These scriptures are the picture of the marriage that Christ wills us to have:

Matthew 19:5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

Matthew 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Ephesians 5:24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Ephesians 5:28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

Colossians 3:18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.

Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

1 Timothy 3:11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

1 Peter 3:1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

Ephesians 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

1 Corinthians 7:4 The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.

1 Peter 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Titus 2:4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
Titus 2:5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

1 Peter 3:1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

1 Peter 3:5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:

Yeeeeeaaaaaah.... and that was nice, Linda. I like that... I used to have trouble with that question and verse myself. Skeptics be asking questions about that, and I knew the answer but I would struggle on the right way to say it... I like your examples. Good job!!!

Thank you. I've never heard it put this way, but it makes sense. So basically, we're not asking for what we want, we're asking for what Christ would want. What about when we pray for something specific like a happy marriage. Isn't that what Christ would want? Is that something that we can ask and if we believe, we will receive it?

John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

When you ask in the name of someone, you are asking in their steed.

It would be as if I were your mom and you could go to the local store and ask for provisions in my name. You would be asking as if it were me there asking and thus you would receive those things that I were there asking for.

Jesus in this passage is teaching about the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that is going to come to the disciples after he goes to the Father.

That Holy Spirit is going to come and work in us to will and want according to the the will and want of the father. We are changed in this way when we are born again.

It is the work of the Spirit that allows us to come in the name of Jesus and as what we will... our will having become HIS will.

You cannot go and ask Jesus to win the lottery and receive because Jesus would not be playing the lottery. If you ask in HIS name then you ask in HIS steed what HE would ask, this HE will do that the Father is glorified in HIM.

Do you understand?

You could not go to the store and ask for beer in my name cause the store knows that i would not ask for beer.

We need to understand what it is to ask something in someone's name... it is to ask as if they were asking. There are some things that we can be assured of revceiving because we know that they are fully in the will of the Father and of Christ.

If we are being led by the SPirit, which is the only way that we can ask in HIS name, we will not be asking for things that HE would not ask for because the Spirit knows!

What exactly can we ask for and the Lord will give us? If everyone got what they asked for we'd all win the lottery and live forever. I know God isn't some kind of genie giving us everything we ask for, so what is it that we can ask for, what does He want to do for us that if we ask, we'll receive? Does anyone know how to answer this? Thank you.
