I believe the occaisson was one of the instances of the appearance of the preincarnate Christ, with two of His angels. In chapter 19 it is the two angels who visit and guide Lot in Sodom. The third "Man" is referenced as LORD in the Word, and in verse 22 we read that Abraham yet stood before the LORD.
We could read of the same sort of preincarnated appearance in Daniel:
Daniel 3: 24: Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellers, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. 25: He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.

In Gen. 18:2 is these three men angels?
1 And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, 3 And said, My LORD, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:
Thanks
