News video about food crisis

I found it interesting to note that biofuels are called a crime against humanity -that is -growing to burn that which could be eaten. It seems to me it is just a symptom of our inordinate appetite for fuels. We want such an amount of fuel to maintain a certain way of life -we do not need it to live (not to say that immediately taking food from mouths to feed our SUVs wouldn't be criminal).

It is possible to have clean fuels and no hunger -but moving from the present situation to such a state is tricky indeed -if at all possible being left to men.

Technically - it has been for some time -but increases... there are many hungry -even in America... and food shortage is only one cause... 15 million working Americans live below poverty level today... In 1998 there was an estimated 180 million malnourished (not counting the simply undernourished) children in the world and malnutrition contributed to 6 million deaths annually, mainly among children... one third of Iraqi children have been malnourished for four years...
In America... About 15 million children -- one out of every four -- live below the official poverty line.
22% of Americans under the age of 18 -- and 25% under age 12 -- are hungry or at the risk of being hungry.
Everyday 2,660 children are born into poverty; 27 die because of it.
Children and families are the fastest growing group in the homeless population, representing 40%

It is sad when you realize we have the resources to feed and house comfortably every man, woman and child. It is said that money is the root of all evil...It can be used well, but to think that people die for lack of a piece of paper or some coins, when everything they need is readily available... and those who have much more than they need horde it away so it is not used, and when they do it helps the rich and rarely the poor -I've heard so many lazy rich people say the poor need to work for it, but that is ignorant. In my experience the poorer the person, the harder they work and are willing to work. Perhaps if all had the same opportunities -but they don't... and some get rich making certain they don't.

We sure need Christ to rule.... what happens between now and then will be very sad, indeed, but it is necessary and God will then bring the creation out of futility. There is nothing lost he cannot return -there is nothing we can destroy he cannot rebuild. We will have learned we need him -and he will not call the former things to remembrance.

Matthew 24:6-7 (King James Version)

6And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

It really is at the door.

Even so, come Lord Jesus!!!!

"Two words not in common currency in recent years — famine and starvation — are now being raised as distinct possibilities in the poorest, food-importing countries."

Fatal food riots in Haiti. Violent food-price protests in Egypt and Ivory Coast. Rice so valuable it is transported in armoured convoys. Soldiers guarding fields and warehouses. Export bans to keep local populations from starving.

Bread Price To Rise Four Percent after Passover

Quote:
(IsraelNN.com) Consumers will have another reason to refrain from eating bread after the seven-day Passover holiday. Major bakeries announced Monday they will hike prices by four percent and are waiting for a response from the Industry, Trade and Labor Ministry. The continuing higher prices of energy and of flour were cited as the reasons for the proposed increases.

Food crisis tightens its grip on the world

Quote:
INTERNATIONAL. WIth grain being diverted to biofuels and shortages rising, the signs on the wall are clear: the world is in the grip of a food crisis. The World Bank has cautioned that 33 countries could face social unrest because of higher food and energy prices.

''The pressure is visible on the streets already with protests against food prices increasing and governments responding with often counterproductive controls on prices and exports. In the latest incident, at least four deaths have been reported in southern Haiti when demonstrations against rising food prices turned into riots,'' wrote The Gulf Today on its editorial for today.

Last week, the paper said, a riot broke out in Cote d' Ivoire over rising food prices leading to one death and injury to about ten others, forcing President Gbagbo to cancel custom duties and cut taxes on household products. There have also been reports about riots in other West African countries including Cameroon, Burkina Faso and Senegal.

'The worst drought on record has slashed Australia's exports of wheat. Global wheat stocks are at their lowest levels since 1979. Prices are increasing sharply for some of the most basic foodstuffs traded on international commodity markets. Harvests have been reduced by drought in countries including Canada and Australia, and by a US freeze followed by excessive rain last year.

China, India and Vietnam, it continued, have cut rice exports and Indonesia has reduced import tariffs to protect food supplies and cool inflation. Harsh weather in producing countries and a boom in demand from fast-developing countries have pushed up prices of staple foods by 80% since 2005. Last month, rice prices hit a 19-year high, wheat prices rose to a 28-year high and almost twice the average price of the past 25 years.

''With higher energy prices and demand for biofuels draining maize stocks, no one country can deal with the problem alone," as World Bank president Robert Zoellick has pointed out. A major factor adding to the crisis is unbridled population growth.

Interesting article on CNN that discusses how in some parts of the world, the price of food is fast approaching a days' wage. Is Revelation 6:6 close?

"In just two months," Zoellick said in his speech, "rice prices have skyrocketed to near historical levels, rising by around 75 percent globally and more in some markets, with more likely to come. In Bangladesh, a 2-kilogram bag of rice ... now consumes about half of the daily income of a poor family."

The price of wheat has jumped 120 percent in the past year, he said -- meaning that the price of a loaf of bread has more than doubled in places where the poor spend as much as 75 percent of their income on food.

Revelation 6:6

And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; but do not harm oil and wine!”.
