Last Christmas when ever a store clerk would say:
"Happy Holiday!" I would reply "Merry Christmas!"
I had one clerk tell me thank you because she said she was sick of all the happy holiday stuff her boss pushed down her throat.

Christian Bigotry: The Only Acceptable Cultural Prejudice

The slow but steady rise of the anti-Christian tide began in the early to mid 80's and is now reaching the flood stage. Do you think I am overreacting? Here is just one week's worth of anti-Christian headlines:

"Massachusetts Mannn Arrested for Protest of Homosexual Kindergarten Curriculum"

"Air Force Rule May Ban Chrisitian Prayer"

"Wiccan Halts Jesus Prayers at Town Council"

"Distribution of Bibles, Open Prayer Stopped by School Administration"

"Air Force Sued Over Religious Intolerance."

"Praying School Board Compared to Terrorists"

"Police Arrested Christians Sharing Faith Outside of Courthouse"

And these are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. From California to the Carolinas andn from the Florida Keys to the Canadian border, Christian faith in America is under fire. Organizations like the ACLU, People for the American Way, and a host of other leftist groups are in full attack mode against anything that remotely resembles a public Christian testimony.

The ACLU recently sent a letter to the governors of 17 states treatening to bring lawsuits against each one of their states if they continue to use government funds to reach abstinence education in their public school systems. Now bear in mind that none of these programs mention God or carry any kind of religious connotation. The reason the ACLU is upset is that abstinnence, the only surefire way to curb teen pregnancy and stop the deadly spread of sexually transmitted diseases, is considered to be a "religious value."

So now, not only are Christians banned from speaking the name of their Lord at a City Council Meeting and sharing their faith if they happen to be in the Air Force, the ACLU wants all thought banned that might be rooted in Christian morality. I guess this means the ACLU wants us to stop telling students to tell the truth and to stop encouraging them to treat each other with respect since "thou shalt not bear false witness" and "love your neighbor as yourself" are also biblically based concepts. The point they seem to miss is there can be no shared, true morality that does not line up with the teaching of God's Word.

And make no mistake, it is just Christian thought and expression that must be banned. The ACLU is sueing the small town of Tijeras, N.M. (population about 500) to force them to remove a tiny cross from their town seal. The cross is accompanied by a much larger Native American relgious symbol (the Native American zia) but the ACLU chose to ignore that symbol in favor of targeting the Christian symbol. This senario is played out over and over across America revealing the true agenda of the ACLU has nothing to do with separation of church and state and everything to do with separation of Christians from public life.

It is true Christians should not be suprised by this but we should be alarmed. We should also refuse to be intimidated by the threat of lawsuits. In 1983, the United States Supreme Court said in Marsh v. Chambers that "In light of the unambiguous and unbroken history of more than 200 years, there can be no doubt that the practice of opening legislative sessions with prayer has become part of the fabric of our society. To invoke Divine guidance on a public body enntrusted with making the laws is not, in these circumstances, an establishment of religion or a step toward establishment; it is simply a tolerable acknowledgemennt of beliefs widely held among the people of this country." I realize that case law has built against Christian freedom since 1983 but the fact remains we have a contstitutional ruling by the Supreme Court that supports the Christians right to free public expression of their faith.

We are just two months away from the celebration of the birth of Christ which means the battle to make Christmas a truly silent night when it comes to public proclimations of the reason for the season has begun in earnest. Some states are already warning their employees they cannot, while on the job, wish anyone a "Merry Christmas." School Boards are printing warnings for schools that might try to slip a non-secular Christmas song into their "Winter Holiday" concert repertoire. City and county councils are "making their list and checkinng it twice" to find out who might be sneaking three wise men, a virgin, and a baby in manger onto their Santa exclusive, secular only grounds. Long before the Yule log is burning in the fireplace and the last strand of lights is placed on the Christmas (oops, excuse me) "holiday tree", the PC police will be out in force looking to condemn any mention of the real meaning of Christmas.

Some say all of this talk about Christian persecution is nonsense when you consider the fact that believers in China, India, Sudan, and many other places around the world find themselves in life and death situations over their faith every day. They say we should be thankful to live in a country where we can express our belief in Christ freely without fear of direct reprisals from the governnment. I will grant you the fact that Christians in America are certainly not being traumatized by systematic persecution but we are being demonnized, marginalized, and, if the trend continues, we will eventually be criminalized.

The radicals on nthe left who want "under God" removed from the pledge and want all Christians to be under cover when they speak of their faith know they cannot win that battle today in a hand to hand fight. So they lie in wait and lob hate bombs from a safe distance until a majority of Americans agree that Christians are the devil with the blue dress on. Thus the three step process of demonizing, marginalizing, and then criminalizing. In the 1970's aided by the media and Hollywood, the left began portraying Christians as backward, morally strapped, party poopers out to rain on on countries hedonistic parade. Then, aided by some of our own scandal ridden leaders, the left made progress in the 80's in their bid to portray Christians as being outright evil.

In the 1990's Christians were pushed away from the table of public discourse with our brand of morality and our belief in absolute truth being relegated to the back porch of public debate like some uninvited guest trying to sneak into a dinner party. Now all that is left is the process of criminalization, which is well on the way with hate crimes legislation currently before the United States Senate that will eventually make it a criminal offense for a Christian to biblically address homosexuality.

Born again, Evangelical Christians who understand the stakes of the culture war must refuse to simply lie down in the face of the anti-Christian juggernaut that threatens to steamroll us into silence. We must continue to pray, stand for what is right, and make a defense for the truth that is in us until Jesus comes or calls us home.

Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house. He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.
