I did not mean to imply that the poll was false in regard to the republicans being more religious than democrats. I just feel in my heart that there are equally as many christian democrats as there are christian republicans.

On Favorminded's site there is a great article titled Prejudiced Christians. This article was written by a young woman who had the opportunity to meet and to talk in depth with this muslim family who had a small jewlery business in one of the malls in our town. I would encourage everyone to read the article for it's really a very good one. Anyway I feel strongly that muslim american's civil rights should not be violated and may there never again be any rounding up of people and putting them in any sort of internment camps. Again we all need to keep praying.

yeah, when i read that part in the article i too felt the same way, but it isn't a false statement. in any poll done you'll see that the majority of people voting for republicans are indeed very religious, and most churches urge their congregations to vote republican, whch i think is absurd for a church to do as Jesus did say, quite frankly, I don't think the republican party is at all a religous party. From what I see, they use religion as a tool to get elected.

I'll say it again: Red, white, or blue; a politician is a politician. (Except Senator Russ Feingold, Wisconsin [clap2] i exclude him because he's the politician I respect the most)

But in any case, yes, i do not agree with ANY reason to take away anyone's civil rights unless they're tried and found guilty in a court of law. As much as I love FDR, i really wish he would have left Japanese Americans alone back during WWII. I'm glad the "war on terror" hasn't produced prison camps as of yet. I think a poll such as this is a bad sign... people need to be more educated about our national identity, and be more educated about the letter of the law, which is the constitution.

I believe it's a sad situation to even think of curtailing the civil rights of muslim americans.
Just because they are muslims they shouldn't all be lumped together as being terrorists or possible terrorists. This is too reminiscent of what happened before World War11 began when they began rounding up all of the japanese americans and put them in internment camps located in various cities and states around this nation and they were kept there for the duration of the war.
Although it has not progressed that far yet for the muslim americans I have to pray that it does not.

Yes there are terrorists located around the world
but everyone needs to be very careful before they declare some people terrorists. The news does instill a lot of fear in people and then they don't think rationally - they tend to believe anything they hear without knowing the whole truth. These are very trying times and we must all keep praying!

An added thought I do not believe that republicans are more religious than democrats as stated in the above news story. That is quite a prejudicial statement.

Poll shows U.S. views on Muslim-Americans
Nearly half of those surveyed say some rights should be restricted

The Associated Press
Updated: 9:57 p.m. ET Dec. 17, 2004

ITHACA, N.Y. - Nearly half of all Americans believe the U.S. government should restrict the civil liberties of Muslim-Americans, according to a nationwide poll.

The survey conducted by Cornell University also found that Republicans and people who described themselves as highly religious were more apt to support curtailing Muslims’ civil liberties than Democrats or people who are less religious.

'Disturbing news'
Researchers also found that respondents who paid more attention to television news were more likely to fear terrorist attacks and support limiting the rights of Muslim-Americans.

“It’s sad news. It’s disturbing news. But it’s not unpredictable,” said Mahdi Bray, executive director of the Muslim American Society. “The nation is at war, even if it’s not a traditional war. We just have to remain vigilant and continue to interface.”

The survey found 44 percent favored at least some restrictions on the civil liberties of Muslim Americans. Forty-eight percent said liberties should not be restricted in any way.

The survey showed that 27 percent of respondents supported requiring all Muslim-Americans to register where they lived with the federal government. Twenty-two percent favored racial profiling to identify potential terrorist threats. And 29 percent thought undercover agents should infiltrate Muslim civic and volunteer organizations to keep tabs on their activities and fund-raising.

Cornell student researchers questioned 715 people in the nationwide telephone poll conducted this fall. The margin of error was 3.6 percentage points.

37 percent believe terrorist attack likely
James Shanahan, an associate professor of communications who helped organize the survey, said the results indicate “the need for continued dialogue about issues of civil liberties” in a time of war.

While researchers said they were not surprised by the overall level of support for curtailing civil liberties, they were startled by the correlation with religion and exposure to television news.

“We need to explore why these two very important channels of discourse may nurture fear rather than understanding,” Shanahan said.

According to the survey, 37 percent believe a terrorist attack in the United States is still likely within the next 12 months. In a similar poll conducted by Cornell in November 2002, that number stood at 90 percent.
