This Week:

Kinsey Goes Hollywood or Vice Versa?

In theaters across the nation, moviegoers will have an opportunity to learn something about Dr. Alfred Kinsey, the famed sex researcher and about Hollywood's philosophical commitment to advancing Kinsey's philosophy of "pan-sexuality."

Hollywood has taken up the subject of Kinsey and his controversial research with what seems to be an overt bias. Apparently, the only "controversy" worthy of inclusion in Director Bill Condon's version about Kinsey is his occasional foray into homosexual liaisons. Of course Condon paints this controversy as being largely the result of the "unenlightened" fifties and not the fact that Kinsey was a sexual deviant.

What is loudly ignored is the controversy surrounding Kinsey's so-called scientific methodology and at best unethical or at worst criminal research involving children. Ever since Kinsey released his research in 1948 there have been scholars and scientists who questioned the methodology Kinsey used in arriving at his findings. The American Statistical Association viewed Kinsey's research as being largely without statistical support.1 William Simon, a Senior Research Sociologist at the Kinsey Institute admitted in an interview that the Kinsey team threw out three-quarters of the "interviews," keeping only what Kinsey wished to keep--no one knowing what was kept versus shredded.2 The science director of the Rockefeller Foundation, Warren Weaver, stated firmly that no one on Kinsey's team knew anything about mathematics or statistics.3 Clearly there is dispute surrounding the scientific accuracy of Kinsey's claims and the fact is, all of Kinsey's assertions were based upon interviews, the contents of which remain secluded from public view and only the interpretations of the Kinsey team have ever been presented.

What made Kinsey's research so significant is that Kinsey presented a perspective to the American public which supposedly demonstrated that there was wide-spread sexually deviant behavior being practiced in America - that sexual deviancy was in fact the "norm." Of course this assertion was based upon false and manipulated "data" that served to support Kinsey's own sexual ideology. The impact of Kinsey's claims was devastating when you consider that his conclusions seemed to prove that there were no public consequences to sexual deviancy. This one point proved instrumental in leading American's to modify their previously held sexual ethics and the groundwork for the sexual revolution to come in the 1960s was laid. This was Kinsey's goal; to demonstrate through the guise of science that sexuality was merely a natural animal instinct and therefore all desires which were sexual in nature should be regarded as natural and neither right or wrong.

However, when we understand that Kinsey's data was falsified to support his presuppositions it is easy to understand why the last fifty years have overwhelmingly demonstrated that there are in fact profound public consequences to private sexual behavior.

As to the most controversial aspect of Kinsey's research it is clearly that of his sanctioned abuse of children. This idea of childhood sexuality was a unique and essential aspect of Kinsey's research and subsequent effect. This premise was derived from Kinsey's controversial experiments on children which involved the participation of known pedophiles and child predators. Essentially Kinsey concluded that because children demonstrated a "perceived" physiological response to sexual stimulation they were capable of experiencing sexual satisfaction which he then speculated represented latent or repressed desire. What Kinsey never considered was the fact that such experiences were harmful to children, instead he rationalized that the "harm" was an artificial result of social conditioning.

The obvious question is: where or how did Kinsey observe this "perceived" physiological response to the sexual stimulation of children? This is without question the most disturbing and egregious aspect of Kinsey's so-called research. It has since been discovered that Kinsey along with his team of researchers at Indiana University employed a number of known and notorious pedophiles in the course of their research on children.

In Ethical Issues in Sex Therapy, Volume II (1980), influential sexologists Masters, Johnson, Kolodny, and Weems present a series of papers reprising the history of the research on the "Ethics of Sex Research Involving Children and the Mentally Retarded." One important essay by Albert Jonsen and J. Mann, states that Kinsey "included observational reports on the speed of reaching orgasm in 1,888 boys, ages 5 months to adolescence, who were timed with a stop watch," and "147 pre-adolescent girls, for a total of 2,035 children. The authors cite their "personal communication" with Kinsey and co-author Wardell Pomeroy, who validated the 1,888 boys in the Kinsey reports.4

Furthermore, in 1998, a documentary team from Yorkshire television uncovered even more disturbing information about the specific pedophiles that provided Kinsey with much of his data. The Yorkshire documentary entitled, Secret History: Kinsey's Pedophiles, was broadcast in Great Britain on August 10, 1998. In a review, England's BBC Radio Times wrote that "this deeply unsettling documentary...makes a strong case that Kinsey cultivated [pedophiles whose crimes] he presented as scientific data." In the Yorkshire interview, Paul Gebhard, a Kinsey assistant researcher, confirmed that "certain of our subjects," who joined Kinsey's child sexuality research team, were child molesters.5

When asked how Kinsey came into contact with these pedophiles, Gebhard said, "That was rather easy. We got them in prisons, a lot of them... Then there was also a pedophile organization in this country... not incarcerated... they cooperated... You had one in Britain... a British pedophile organization."6

Kinsey was soliciting pedophiles from known pedophile organizations to assist in their child sex experiments. In one instance, James H. Jones, a pro-Kinsey biographer, in his Yorkshire interview, described the data from one of the pedophiles on whom Kinsey relied:

"Kinsey elevated to... the realm of scientific information... what should have been dismissed as unreliable, self-serving data provided by a predatory pedophile... I don't have any doubt in my own mind that man wreaked havoc in a lot of lives. Many of his victims were infants and Kinsey in that chapter himself gives pretty graphic descriptions of their response to what he calls sexual stimulation. If you read those words, what he's talking about is kids who are screaming. Kids are protesting in every way they can the fact that their bodies or their persons are being violated."7

Kinsey is now being hailed as a revolutionary and hero responsible for leading America out of bondage to its antiquated and repressive morality. Please! Kinsey was a monster on par with the notorious Nazi, Dr. Josef Mengele.

Hollywood can pontificate all they want, they can label those who stand in opposition to Kinsey's ideas as "backward" and "unenlightened" but any rational person understands based on the evidence that early sexual activity is NOT a childhood goal, that the sexual abuse of children is morally reprehensible and criminal, and that deviant sexual behaviors most certainly have public consequences.
