BEIJING, China -- A strong earthquake has shaken southwestern China, killing at least 11 people and injuring more than 200, local officials have said.
The magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit Yunnan province -- about 1,400 miles (2, 253 kilometers) southwest of Beijing -- late Monday, destroying more than 800 homes and damaging over 13,000 others, according to local authorities.
Twenty-three people are in a serious condition, said an official from the disaster relief office of Dayao County where the quake was centered.
The quake -- which also damaged a local power station -- could be felt in the provincial capital of Kunming, 110 miles away.
"We are continuing our search and rescue mission, while transferring injured residents to hospitals," the official told CNN.
One county official said there had been two aftershocks, adding that most telecommunications to the stricken area had been cut off, the Associated Press reported
