Israeli troops killed a terrorist today from the Al Aksa Martyrs Brigade, a militia linked to Yasser Arafat`s ruling Fatah faction. The incident occurred during a raid on his hideout in Palestinian-ruled Kalkilya in Samaria. The slain gunman was identified as an aide to Ibrahim Mansour, the leader of the Brigades in Kalkiliya. Mansour was arrested. The army said both men were armed and that one was killed when he tried to escape arrest. Mansour is said to be responsible for a shooting attack two weeks ago that killed a 7-year-old Israeli girl.
In the Gaza Strip, Palestinians fired an anti-tank missile at the Jewish settlement of Kfar Darom, wounding three Israelis. Israel responded by sealing off the main Gaza highway, hindering the movement of Palestinian traffic. The highway had just been opened on Monday after the Israeli pullout from parts of Gaza. Today, an Israeli bulldozer placed cement barriers back on the highway.
Each side accused the other of failing to keep its part of the peace “roadmap.” "The Israeli government is not serious about calming down the situation on the ground,” said Palestinian Information Minister Nabil Amr. “They are not serious about reaching any political settlement."
But Israel said the Palestinians are not living up to their commitments. "The roadmap requires first and foremost that the Palestinians dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism, which they have failed to implement," said government spokesman Dore Gold. "Until they do, Israel has every right to take defensive measures on behalf of its citizens."
Now that the Palestinians have called a “truce,” Israel`s top general is declaring victory in the 33-month-old war with the Palestinians. “Given that Israeli society withstood the test, and the army fought terror with heroism, we now need to announce that we have won," said army Chief of Staff Moshe Ya`alon. "There are those who say that there is no military solution, so let`s surrender," Ya`alon told Israel`s biggest newspaper “Yediot Ahronot.” "But the fact is, we managed to bring a war that was not simple, one that could not be won with a crushing attack, to the point where the other side realizes that using force will not bring about a solution." He hinted that the cease-fire declared by Palestinian terror groups is an indication of defeat.
