Mubarak tries to shift focus on Israel's WMD

Fri Apr 18,2003 -- The Middle East Newsline reported yesterday that the President of Egypt, Mubarak, has called for a new Arab defense force. He said that a force such as this must be established for Arab security. The previous Arab defense pact made in 1951, he says, has become useless and insignificant in the light of current world events.

Mubarak is angry that that Israel has the backing of the United States by one-hundred percent, while the United States continues it crackdown of Arab world WMD's. The United States is "enforcing a double standard", they say, while Iraq was forced to comply with UN resolutions. Infact, Mubarak backed the US initiative to attack Iraq back in 1990, but has since changed his mind.

The Arab League wants to know why Israel is not being inspected on their own weapons of mass destruction. Israel currently has somewhere between 200 and 500 thermonuclear weapons and a massive system to deliever them. The Arab world believes that Israel's nuclear regime program represents a serious problem for the peace in the Middle East.

While coalition forces are currently in Iraq forcing the regime change of Saddam's empire, there are also rumors that Syria is next in the war against terror. The Arab world wants to know why since Israel's WMD's are a "potential for nuclear flashpoint".

Israeli nukes are said to be among the most sophisticated in the world, made mostly for fighting in the Middle East, though Israel claims that it is clearly for self-defense, as Syria has often threatened to launch an attack on Israel if the United States were to declare war in Syria.

Among Israel's weapons of mass destruction are neutron bombs, that are largely designed to kill while leaving buildings intact. They also have bombers that are capable of reaching Moscow, and cruise missles, land mines and artillery shells that have a range of 45 miles. Their bombs range of ones larger than the Hiroshima Bomb to smaller mini nukes.

Saudi Arabia's Assistant Foreign Minister Dr. Nizar Madani recently said, "It is a great threat to the region that Israel's nuclear programmes remain outside the reach of international monitoring." He was referring to Israel's sophisticated arsenal of bio and chemical weapons. Rumors abounded back in 1998 that Israeli scientists were gaining ground in indentifying a distinctive gene that certain Arabs were carrying. The rumor continued that the scientists would then engineer deadly microorganisms that would only attack those people that carried the gene. This is a far-fetched assumption. Especially since five years have passed and Israel has yet to launch a first strike.

However, back in 2000, Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid stated, "Keeping the Israeli nuclear policy undercover does not help to erase doubts and suspicion in the Arab world, which has negative impacts on the Middle East peace process. This will help remove nuclear weapons from the region completely and once and for all."

Arabs say that the Israeli nuclear arsenal has profound implications for the future of peace in the Middle East and also state that a nuclear free Israel would make a Nuclear Free Middle East and a comprehensive regional peace agreement much more likely. Meanwhile, several Gulf Cooperation Council states have been approached by Egypt to revive a joint defense industry that would eventually produce weapons for current Arab League members.
