ISRAEL GOES ON 'WAR FOOTING' JANUARY 15
A few days ago, local community workers here in Israel told me they had been informed in their workplace that Israel would go on 'war footing' January 15th. Employees in local and national agencies were briefed with specific instructions regarding the change in status for daily life here. I did not report it immediately as it was not announced on any local news nor printed in the Israeli newspapers until today. It is now public knowledge. This means that the nation will be on high alert against an Iraqi attack. Shelters will be officially prepared and opened, gas masks available and a myriad of preparatory measures in place and operative by the 15th.
It has also been reported openly that Israeli Air Force jets have been patrolling the skies of southern Israel since Thursday against an Iraqi attack.
Another indication of the imminence of war is the mass arrival in Israel of newspaper reporters from all over the globe. We were personally told by a news executive here that "top floor apartments in Jerusalem are the hottest real estate item at the moment. Every foreign news agency is renting every available apartment with access to the roof of the building in order to be positioned for reporting on incoming missiles or any other form of attack against Israel." You can be sure that international news agencies are not spending large amounts of money to rent penthouse apartments without serious reason to do so.
Meanwhile the US reports 250,000 forces are being moved to the Persian Gulf, and the London Sunday Times is adding that Britain will be deploying forces in the Persian Gulf also on the 15th of this month, the same day Israel goes on 'war footing'. Coincidence???? According to the report, when British Prime Minister Tony Blair gives the order later this week, 20,000 troops will begin their deployment to the Gulf.
GROWING SUSPICION OF BIOLOGICAL ATTACK
In a personal conversation with an intelligence source last night, I was told that there are serious indications within US and Israeli counter-terrorism agencies that Al Qaeda’s three command centers are preparing mega-terror attacks for US and Israeli targets.
It appears to those 'in the know' that Bin Laden's Al Qaeda network has for the moment put aside plans for nuclear or chemical attacks in favor of biological warfare and that the group has established a headquarters in northern Iraq as one of its three main planning centers for strikes against Israel and the United States. All Zarqawi, whose full name is Ahmad Fadeel Nazal Abu Mussab al Zarqawi, aka al Khalayleh, is the senior project director. He was spotted traveling between Baghdad, the enclave’s main city of Bayara, and then on to Damascus and Beirut, between November and December. This sighting gave the Bush administration its first direct proof of the terrorist link between Baghdad and al Qaeda. This is what the US President was referring to when he said on Tuesday, December 31, that “an attack from Saddam Hussein or a surrogate of Saddam Hussein would cripple our economy.”
While there are two other 'directors' for these attacks, stationed elsewhere in the world, the most imminent threat appears to be from Zarqawi and his associates.
A Jordanian-Palestinian in his late 30s, he fled his native land in 1999 after the authorities exposed his plot to blow up hotels hosting foreign tourists visiting Jordan for millennium celebrations. He is the only al Qaeda operative known for certain to have undergone extensive terrorist training – including airline hijacking techniques -- in Iraq’s notorious Salman Pak special weapons facility. He has since established his headquarters and residence in Bayara, the North Iraqi town near Iran which is controlled by the fundamentalist Ansar al-Islam and Iraqi military intelligence.
Just as Israelis have been instructed to store a minimum of 12 litres of water per person in their family and quantites of non-perishable food, many Americans have begun to do the same. Some may cry 'paranoia' while others call it 'wisdom'. Each person must decide for himself. In light of intelligence information, I am reminded of what my parents always told me: "Better to be safe than sorry." We all buy auto insurance and home owners insurance in the hope that we will never need to file a claim. Some extra water and food around the house is less expensive than our monthly insurance premiums.....and may be crucial. If not, nothing is lost. If the threat does not materialize, eat the food and drink the water....and thank God!
