WILSON, N.C. (AP) - Up to 8 inches of rain overwhelmed drought-parched ground across eastern North Carolina on Monday, causing widespread flash flooding that left one man dead and closed a major highway.
Heavy rain, strong winds and hail also struck southwestern Nebraska, damaging crops and flooding roads.
Although much of North Carolina is suffering from a four-year drought, most of the rain didn't fall on the driest areas in the state's central region and experts predicted the relief will be short-lived.
In Henderson, about 50 miles north of Raleigh, receding floodwaters on Monday afternoon revealed the body of 42-year-old Marvin Delano Snipes. His body was found about 600 feet from his car, snagged in debris from a nearby creek.
In Wilson, about 50 miles east of Raleigh, traffic on U.S. 301 was blocked because of flooding under a railroad trestle.
Linda Taylor abandoned her business, Creative Graphics. As she left, firefighters were trying to rescue someone from a submerged car in front of her building, she said.
"All you could see is the tail lights in the car that was flooded," she told The Wilson Daily Times.
More rain is expected through Wednesday.
An exceptional drought, - the most severe category - extends from central Georgia, through the Carolinas and into central Virginia.
In southwestern Nebraska, which faces its own drought, strong winds, heavy rains and hail closed a highway and damaged crops.
In Dundy County, a sheriff's deputy reported that one vehicle was submerged and the level of standing water had reached the top of some mailboxes in Max, about 10 miles north of the Kansas border.
Ann Rundhaug, 54, of Max said her car got stuck in her front yard as she attempted to reach her garage.
"This is the worst storm I have ever seen," she said. "It took me by surprise."
