BEIJING (AP) - Responding to several petitions on behalf of Taiwan, China on Saturday said the notion that Taipei would join the United Nations was repugnant and represented unacceptable interference in Beijing's internal affairs. The official Xinhua News Agency quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan as saying said several nations, "at the instigation of the Taiwan authorities," wanted Taiwan to be discussed at the next session of the U.N. General Assembly.
"This is a serious violation of the purpose and principles of the U.N. Charter, an infringement of China's sovereignty," Kong said. "As a province of China, Taiwan has absolutely no qualifications whatsoever to join the United Nations and its special organizations in any name or in any form."
Tensions between China and Taiwan have been particularly high after recent comments by Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian challenging Beijing's view that the self-ruled island belongs to the mainland. The two sides split amid civil war five decades ago.
China has responded with scorn and threats, saying any step toward formal independence could lead to war.
Taiwan has tried to downplay Chen's comments, saying they didn't signal a policy change. On Tuesday, Chen softened his comments, saying he meant the two were "equal sovereigns."
