A magnitude 6.5 earthquake ( news - web sites) beneath the Indian Ocean jolted the tourist island of Bali and other parts of southern Indonesia on Wednesday but caused no damage.
The temblor struck at 9:04 a.m. local time (0204 GMT), and was felt in Bali and nearby provinces of West and East Nusatenggara, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The agency said the quake was centered in the Indian Ocean, 182 kilometers (113 miles) south of Sumba island and about 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) southeast of Jakarta.
Suyono, an official on Sumba, said local authorities were checking on its possible impact in remote villages on the island.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago nation, is prone to frequent seismic upheavals.
A quake of magnitude 6 can cause considerable damage if it hits residential areas.
