Wed Jul 17,2002 -- Faced with a 10,500-acre wildfire churning near the Nevada-California line. So, a lodge, nearby campsites & RV parks, and towns in the area, all were under voluntary evacuation notices Monday as the fire inched down a Sierra foothill half a mile away. The blaze, sparked by lightning last week, threatened as many as 250 homes and 25 other buildings. The fire grew 20-fold Sunday as high wind mixed with low humidity and temperatures in the mid-90s. At its height, fire whorls -- small tornadoes of flame -- sent firefighters scrambling for cover. "If it could go to 10,000 acres in one day, there's no reason it can't go to another 10,000," said Bureau of Land Management spokesman Mark Struble. The fire pushed a plume of smoke into the sky visible 75 miles away in Reno, Nevada. With red lights flashing and sirens blaring, 40 fire engines from across the state raced to join 533 firefighters on the line. The fire already burned through power lines south of Lake Topaz, leaving residents without power or phones.
The wildfire, only about 10 percent contained, was burning just NW of the site of a 22,750-acre fire last month near Walker, Calif. Another 10,000-acre fire raged unchecked on the Nevada-Utah line 50 miles SE of Ely as well. Other fires included southern Nevada's first major fire of the season, which blackened 1,500 acres of drought-stricken pines only 50 miles west of Las Vegas.

Central Oregon: crews using bulldozers, pickaxes and helicopters seemed to be winning their battle Monday against a 17,300-acre wildfire, one of about 20 burning on some 109,000 acres around the state of Oregon.
SW Colorado: searing temperatures, low humidity and erratic winds pushed a 27,000-acre fire near the tiny communities of Norwood and Redvale.
Fires are burning in other states as well. The National Interagency Fire Center said wildfires have already charred 3.3 million acres so far this year, more than double the 10-year average, and the main fire season is just starting.
Editor's Note: Regardless how each fire is begun, they're saying that it's the actual ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS that are wreaking havoc and allowing the usually easier fires to put out...race out of control as both Arizona & Colorado had record state fires already.
