Wow even the lightning bugs declare his glory!

How much He has to say to us if we just stop for a moment and listen. Thanks for sharing this today.

LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS

By Judy Ballentine

The day was just sinking from sundown into darkness. We were standing in the yard when suddenly a tiny light flickered close by. Then another. As we looked into the surrounding woods, tiny flickers could be seen everywhere.

Of course they were lightning bugs. We stood there admiring them, always amazed at their beauty and miraculous light. I wonder what God’s thoughts were when He decided to create such an insect. Do they serve a purpose other than merely being beautiful and fun to watch?

My son asked why they only blinked at night. Thinking on this question I began to realize the depth of the law involving this insect. I answered that these bugs “blink” their lights during the daylight hours, too, but the darker it became, the brighter their lights became. We never notice them during the day, but when night sets in, you can spot them everywhere.

The comparison to the Christian life is easy to see. Our light should shine all the time, everywhere we go. But it is when we are in the darkest hours of life that Jesus’ light shines brightest. When we stand in the darkness of a world filled with sin and run by Satan, our Light glows for all to see. That Light shows the pathway for others to a forgiving Savior. But how bright our light shines in the darkness is determined by how close we are to that Light. The Light of Jesus in us is only a reflection of His light, for there is no light in us except for His.

Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.” Although we aren’t saved by our works, but by His grace, it is by our good works that His Light shines through and proves our faith to those in darkness.

Like those lightning bugs, let’s keep oil in our lanterns so that when darkness descends, others can find their way to Christ by His Light reflecting from us.
