Report: New Year mega-attack planned By Jerusalem Newswire Editorial Staff December 29, 2003
Jerusalem (jnewwire.com) - Israel's intelligence services have picked up warnings of plans to carry out a non-conventional terrorist attack on New Year's Eve.
According to a report carried on the Scotsman.com website, the police force has been instructed to prepare for three possible types of attacks - from the air, from the sea, or on the land, possibly involving several simultaneous "suicide" bombings.
Kindergartens, hospitals, apartment buildings and sacred sites are believed to be possible targets.
While the intelligence services reportedly know more specifics concerning the attack, they have not shared all their information with the police in order to keep details from leaking out.
Israel has been bracing for an act of mega terrorism for some time as Palestinians try to increase the level of pain and suffering they can inflict on the Jewish state.
Acting on intelligence information last Thursday, IDF gunships assassinated a senior Hamas leader down in Gaza who was believed to be planning such a major attack.
