Israeli group holds traditional protest against ban on prayer at holy site
Thu Jul 18,10:10 AM ET
By TALLIE LIEBERMAN, Associated Press Writer
JERUSALEM - On the day Jews mourn the destruction of their biblical Temples, a small group of Jewish activists on Thursday held its annual demonstration against prohibition of Jewish prayer at the site, which is also holy to Muslims.

About 40 members of the Temple Mount Faithful, some wearing burlap sacks and dragging iron chains as signs of mourning, demanded permission to pray on the place where the Temples stood 20 centuries ago.
Thursday coincided with the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av, when Jewish tradition holds both biblical Temples were destroyed by invading armies in 586 B.C. and 70 A.D. Observant Jews mark the day by reciting mournful religious writings and fasting.
The hilltop, known to Muslims as Haram a-Sharif, or Noble Sanctuary, is now the site of the Al Aqsa Mosque, Islam's third-holiest site, and the Dome of the Rock shrine, built over the site where Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven. Jews believe the biblical story of Abraham's near-sacrifice of Isaac took place at the same spot.
The conflicting religious claims have turned the site into one of the hottest issues in Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with both sides demanding sovereignty.
Israel took control of the site in the 1967 Mideast war, when it captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip ( news - web sites) and east Jerusalem, including the Old City. Because of the sensitivity of the site, Israel immediately returned control of it to the Supreme Muslim Council and banned Jews from praying there to prevent clashes.
The Temple Mount Faithful group has been unsuccessfully contesting the ban almost from the time it was issued. This week Israel's Supreme Court again rejected the group's appeal, citing security.
Leading the protest in the plaza near the Western Wall, a remnant of the original compound and the holiest site where Jews are permitted to pray, the head of the group, Gershon Solomon, said, "We came to call the Israeli government to show strength and to encourage them to open the Temple Mount to the Jewish people, because the Jewish people cannot exist without a Temple Mount, and the Israeli state will never exist without its Temple Mount."
The group also opposes giving any of the West Bank to the Palestinians, who are demanding the whole territory as part of their state.
Yisrael Atlan, a somber, freckled 11-year old, came to the protest with his parents from a nearby West Bank Jewish settlement. "The Arabs have no right to be here," he said.
After protesting near the closed entrance to the holy site, Solomon led the group through the narrow alleyways of the Muslim Quarter of the Old City.
An elderly Palestinian drinking a cup of tea watched the protesters and complained that the Israelis are the ones causing the suffering.
"They need to go to Ramallah, and see what violence is there," said Kad Moudi. "These people don't know how we are living."
Israeli troops control Ramallah and other main West Bank towns, moving in last month after Palestinian suicide bomb attacks in Jerusalem.
Palestinian shopkeeper Alaa Zorba opposed the group's demand. "They are asking the government to damage our mosque so to build their temple," he said. "I don't think that all Israelis are the same, but I do not think that I could ever live with these Israelis."
