We cannot always control what we hear. We can be in the grocery store and be subjected to someone using profanity. If you have OCD, you can be affected by this for days.

I have been listening to the below series. It is very, very good and helpful.

The Believer's Armor
Ephesians 6:10-24

It is free to download and listen or listen online:

Living like a Christian isn’t easy. In fact it’s an impossible battle—at least without some powerful defensive and offensive help. Thankfully, God knows what you’re facing, knows what you need, and He has designed the perfect protective gear, exclusively for His children.

What armor has God given you to help you face your battles with temptation, doubt, and discouragement? How are Satan and his unseen forces likely to assault you and your faith—and how can you stand strong and have victory against their clever, dangerous attacks?

Piece by powerful piece, John MacArthur inventories the God-given resources that are yours in The Believer’s Armor.

Eph 6:10

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

Eph 6:11

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Eph 6:12

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, [fn] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Eph 6:13

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Eph 6:14

Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

Eph 6:15

and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Eph 6:16

above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

Eph 6:17

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

God bless,
Kindgo

Inside the will of God there is no failure. Outside the will of God there is no success.

While we can not completely control the things we think, we can in some ways by not watching or listening to things that could lead us to think this way, most people are influenced by music and TV.

Yes, you're right! Like with Joseph,

As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive. (Genesis 50:20)

And the crucifixion of our Lord. Out of the greatest sin ever committed by humankind, God brought the greatest blessing that ever came to humankind.

When everything we do is devoted to God, then He will turn even evil meant against us to good.

Very very true Carol. I would venture it is that situation that can be the most dangerous. Your comment made me think of this scripture: Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

The enemy does indeed want to take good things and turn them for evil... but GOD is doing just the opposite if we let him. God takes everything the enemy means for our demise and turns it to work for HIS purpose! Our GOD is an Awesome GOD! [clap2]

It isn't only bad thoughts we need to guard against. Even good things like interests in family, work, cooking, hobbies, or sports can sometimes consume us to the point that we forget the Lord. The enemy can turn even good to evil purposes. We need to remember to keep Christ in all we do, everything. Invite Christ to participate so the enemy cannot.

With OCD I am often upset about thoughts that fly through my mind, uninvited. I was so upset about this at one time, I talked to my Pastor about it. He told me that you can't control what birds fly in your tree, but you don't have to allow them to make a nest there.

We can not always control what flows through our minds at times. Our minds are kind of like a creek that flows continually and occasionally there is some trash that will drift by. Our goal, as Christians, is to not take the time to pick up that trash and dwell on it. We have to constantly and continually guard our minds with Christ Jesus. A sin isn't a sin until you act on it. We are in a battle and we have to be on guard and defend our thoughts and actions constantly. Many Christians struggle with this issue, especially in our highly technological world, but taking control of our thoughts is essential. Proverbs 4:23 states, "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life." The “heart” includes the mind and all that proceeds from it. We need to be in God's Word so that when a sinful thought enters our mind (a temptation), we will be able to recognize it for what it is and know what course to take. We need to be careful of the things we watch on t.v., the things we read and what we look and read on the internet. For if we are not careful we will dwell on the things that produce sinful thoughts. This is the idea of Proverbs 4:23. We are to guard our hearts—what we allow into them and what we allow them to dwell on. Last and most important, nothing we do on our own merit will be of any value unless we have placed our faith in Christ as Savior from our sin. This is where we absolutely must start! Without this, there can be no victory over sinful thoughts and temptations, and God’s promises for His children are not for us, nor is the Holy Spirit’s power available to us!
