My dear friend Pastor Mike Macintosh gave a sermon in late October 2010 that discussed how Jesus used parables to teach the people who had gathered to hear Him. And these parables are given so that those who have hearts toward God will hear... and those who do not will not. It is amazing how the disciples themselves seemed so confused at a lot of things that Jesus said to them… and to the crowds of people. However, Jesus was faithful and just to share the true understanding to those who came to Him with hearts that were seeking to know the truth.

Check out the parable of the sower:

1That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. 2And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. 3And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. 4And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. 5Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, 6but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. 7Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. 8Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9 He who has ears, let him hear.”
Matthew 13:1-9 [ESV]

Jesus spoke that those with ears (not meaning the things on either side of your head but, rather, a heart willing to receive the words spoken by Jesus) must hear what He was saying. He then went on in to explain that the sower sows the word.

18 “Hear then the parable of the sower: 19When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. 20As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, 21yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. 22As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 23As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.#&148;
Matthew 13:18-23 [ESV]

What is the word that the sower is sowing? According to John 1:1, Jesus is The Word. As we tell the world about Jesus, we are sowing the word.

6I planted, Apollos watered, but God [all the while] was making it grow and [He] gave the increase.

7So neither he who plants is anything nor he who waters, but [only] God Who makes it grow and become greater.

8He who plants and he who waters are equal (one in aim, of the same importance and esteem), yet each shall receive his own reward (wages), according to his own labor.

9For we are fellow workmen (joint promoters, laborers together) with and for God; you are God's garden and vineyard and field under cultivation, [you are] God's building.

1 Corinthians 3:6-9 [AMP]

One person plants.

Another person waters.

But the Holy Spirit of God is the One Who makes the seed grow.

And God is the one who gives the increase.
