nice picture of the modern Hinnom valley, Carol Swenson. Looks like all that nitrogen ash in the trash did some good.

Dr. T. V. Oommen has a doctorate in chemistry and engineering and was the person who did the tests on the rocks from the area alleged to be Sodom. Here are some excerpts from his analysis.

Lab Analysis of the Ash
Being a chemist myself, I tested the sample I had brought back to USA in my lab. This revealed that the sample had two major components: (i) -ash (ii) elemental sulfur. Other items found occasionally were rocks (with some sulfur deposit), pebbles, and charcoal.
Ash Test
There have been reports which say that the ash is mostly calcium sulfate (gypsum) which is chemically inactive. I added dilute hydrochloric acid to the ash, and it foamed immediately, but no specific smell was noticed. This gives the indication that the ash has carbonate, and since limestone (calcium carbonate) is found as rock in many parts including the Gomorrah area, the ash could be mostly limestone; in addition there were some acid insoluble residues which could be silicates. Some researchers have thought the ash is mostly calcium sulfate but this is based on elemental analysis of calcium and sulfur. These researchers failed to recognize that the majority of the ash is calcium carbonate (limestone); the sulfur in the ash is from the powdered sulfur balls, not from sulfate. Apparently the destruction either did not decompose the limestone we see in the ash, or if did, the lime (calcium oxide), recombined with atmospheric carbon dioxide to form the carbonate again. The ash also contained iron compounds (perhaps iron oxide) which gave the solution after treatment with the acid a yellow color (due to ferric chloride).
I burned the ash in a Bunsen flame, and nothing much visibly happened. However, calcium carbonate would decompose upon heating to calcium oxide (lime), giving off carbon dioxide. The other material would be unaffected by the heat.
Sulfur
The presence of sulfur in the ash is unmistakable. It occurs as small granules as well as large chunks, sometimes round, as large as an egg (often encased). These 'sulfur balls' are pale yellow, unlike normal sulfur which is clear yellow. Also, these balls are light and are easily crushed into powder when pressed.
Interestingly, my Ph. D. thesis (1970) at the University of Washington, Seattle was on elemental sulfur and its reactions. So testing the sulfur balls was like going back to the old days. However, I had only used orthorhombic sulfur which are yellow crystals. The sulfur allotropes I have seen (monoclinic, amorphous etc.) did not look like the sulfur balls. The sulfur samples I tested were all orthorhombic, but not in crystalline form.
The sulfur ball I tested floated in water, and had a specific gravity of 0.9 (water: 1.0); common sulfur has a specific gravity of 2.0.
A small piece cut from the ball was burned in an open flame. As typical of sulfur, it melted to a dark reddish viscous liquid. Then it caught fire and burned with a bluish flame. The pungent gas, sulfur dioxide (smell of burnt matches) was released. There was a red-orange residue left on the porcelain spatula. This could be red iron oxide either left in the sample or formed by oxidation of some iron containing material left in the sulfur during the heating. Another sample I cut from the interior was almost pure sulfur, and it did not give the reddish residue; only some grayish ash was left.

So at least we know sulfur (much of which had been burned) was present in this area of the Dead Sea at some point, but was it in the Hinnom Valley? I foound no archaeological or geological study that confirms this but neither do these studies deny it for an argument from silence is moot...

However the most ancient Hebrew (that has no vowels uses the tpht here which in all associated cognate languages is interpreted "burning" and the Rabbis understoof the term "Tophet" which was applied to the area to mean "the place of burning"...so since we know that no one stood there pitching endless wood or coal into this valley, what then made it "continuously burn"...this quality made it the ideal place for the Molech worshippers to sacrifice their children...and yes it smelled terrible...but was it raw buring sulpher? We may never know for sure..there certainly was bitumin, sulpher, and other petro based chemicals as part of the geology all over the area of Israel...so who knows...

Hi Paul

Yes, they sacrificed children to their "god".

How blessed we are in Christ Jesus!

Jude 1:24-25 (NASB)
Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy,

to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

Just a bit of History:

Solomon built an altar to Molech at Tophet in the Valley of Hinnon. Manasseh in his idolatrous orgy also honored this deity. Josiah desecrated the Hinnom Valley altar, but Jehoiakim revived the cult." Unger's Bible Dictionary by Merrill F. Unger (Chicago: Moody Press, 1957); page 416.

Gehenna: not just talking trash in this post (no sulfur either).

>>>The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament

G1067. γέεννα geenna; gen. geennēs, fem. noun. Hell, the place or state of the lost and condemned (Matt. 5:29, 30; 10:28 [cf. 23:15; James 3:6]). Represents the Hebr. gā-Hinnom (the Valley of Tophet) and a corresponding Aramaic word. Found twelve times in the NT, eleven of which are in the Synoptic Gospels and in every instance spoken by the Lord Himself.

Many times the word Hadēs (G86) is wrongly translated “hell” or “grave.” Terms descriptive of hell are found in Matt. 13:42; 25:46; Phil. 3:19; 2 Thess. 1:9; Heb. 10:39; 2 Pet. 2:17; Jude 1:13; Rev. 2:11; 19:20; 20:6, 10, 14; 21:8.

The word Gehenna is derived from the Hebr. expression, gā-Hinnom, Valley of Hinnom (Josh. 15:8; Neh. 11:30) which is an abbreviated form of “valley of the son of Hinnom” (2 Kings 23:10; 2 Chr. 28:3; 33:6; Josh. 18:16; Jer. 7:31, 32; 19:2, 6). In the Sept. this name appears variously as pharagx (G5327), ravine, Onom or Ennom (Josh. 15:8); gaienna (Josh. 18:16); Gaibenthom or Gēbeennom (2 Chr. 28:3); ge Bane Ennom or ge Beennom (2 Chr. 33:6). Elsewhere we find generally pharagx, ravine, of the son of Hinnom.

This place became so notorious through its evil associations that it was simply called “the valley” (Jer. 2:23; 31:40), and the gate of Jerusalem leading toward it “the valley gate” (2 Chr. 26:9; Neh. 2:13, 15; 3:13). This valley lay to the south and southwest of Jerusalem. Topographically, it provided the boundary between Judah and Benjamin (Josh. 15:8; 18:16) and the northern limit of the district occupied by the tribe of Judah after the captivity (Neh. 11:30), and it lay in front of the gate Harsith of Jerusalem (Jer. 19:2).

Religiously it was a place of idolatrous and human sacrifices. These were first offered by Ahaz and Manasseh who made their children to “pass through the fire” to Molech in this valley (1 Kings 16:3; 2 Kings 21:6; 2 Chr. 28:3; 33:6). These sacrifices were probably made on the “high places of Tophet which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom” (Jer. 7:31 [cf. Jer. 32:15]). In order to put an end to these abominations, Josiah polluted it with human bones and other corruptions (2 Kings 23:10, 13, 14). But this worship of Molech was revived under Jehoiakim (Jer. 11:10-13; Ezek. 20:30). In consequence of these idolatrous practices in the Valley of Hinnom, Jeremiah prophesied that one day it would be called the “valley of slaughter” and that they should “bury them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury” (Jer. 7:32; 19:11).

It is also referred to as a place of punishment for rebellious or apostate Jews in the presence of the righteous. Gehinnom or Gehenna is not actually mentioned with this meaning in the OT, but it is this and no other place that is implied in Isa. 50:11, “in a place of pain shall ye lie down” (a.t.). Furthermore, in Isa. 66:24 it bears this new connotation and the punishment of the apostate Jews is conceived of as eternal: “They … shall look upon the carcasses of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.” The punishment of Gehenna is implied also in Dan. 12:2, “some to shame and everlasting abhorrence” (a.t.). This particular word “abhorrence” occurs in these two passages only, and the reference in both is to Gehenna. Therefore, Gehenna was always conceived of as a place of both corporeal and spiritual punishment, not only for the Jews, but for all the wicked in the presence of the righteous.

In the NT Gehenna is presented always as the final place of punishment into which the wicked are cast after the last judgment. It is a place of torment both for body and soul as indicated in Matt. 5:29, 30 , “It is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body go into Gehenna” (a.t.). The Lord Jesus did not have the living in mind here, but the dead, for it is not until after the final judgment that the wicked are cast into Gehenna. At the resurrection, the spirit and the body are united. Both are punished in Gehenna. Gehenna as the last punishment was conceived of also as the worst. It slays both soul (the incorporeal spiritual part of man) and body (the corporeal)—not in the absolute sense of annihilation, but relatively in that it permitted a change of state that could suffer the pain and punishment of Gehenna. Thus in Matt. 10:28, “Fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna” (a.t. [cf. Luke 12:5]). Gehenna is conceived of as a fire (Matt. 5:22; 18:9); an unquenchable fire (Mark 9:45); a place where “their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:48); a “furnace of fire” (Matt. 13:42, 50); “the outer darkness” (Matt. 8:12; 22:13; 25:30); a “lake of fire” (Rev. 19:20; 20:10, 14, 15; 21:8). Because fire is often used as an apocalyptic symbol of judgment (especially eschatological judgment) it is difficult to insist that the flames are material. Nevertheless, such a symbol clearly represents a real and painful judgment. Hades, the place of the disembodied wicked spirits, is finally cast into it (Rev. 20:14). In the NT, Hades and Gehenna seem never to be confused together. See Hadēs (G86), the place of the departed souls often translated “hell,” but mistakenly so;[/b] abussos (G12), abyss, bottomless pit; tartaroō (G5020), to incarcerate in eternal torment, spoken of the fallen angels.

>>>Strong’s G1067
γέεννα
geenna
gheh'-en-nah
Of Hebrew origin ([H1516] and [H2011]); valley of (the son of) Hinnom; gehenna (or Ge-Hinnom), a valley of Jerusalem, used (figuratively) as a name for the place (or state) of everlasting punishment:—hell.

>>>Thayer's
γέεννα
geenna
Hell is the place of the future punishment call “Gehenna” or “Gehenna of fire”. This was originally the valley of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, where the filth and dead animals of the city were cast out and burned; a fit symbol of the wicked and their future destruction.

>>>The New Unger’s Bible Dictionary

Gehenna. The valley of Hinnom. A place where the Jewish apostasy, the rites of Molech, were celebrated (1 Kings 11:7). It was converted by King Josiah into a place of abomination, where dead bodies were thrown and burned (2 Kings 23:13-14). Hence the place served as a symbol, and the name was appropriated to designate the abode of lost spirits. In this way the term was used by our Lord.

The word occurs in the NT, and in every case it is properly translated “hell,” denoting the eternal state of the lost after resurrection. That is, the meaning of the English word is particularly the meaning of Gehenna (Matthew 5:22, 29-30; 10:28; 18:9; 23:15, 33; Mark 9:43, 45, 47; Luke 12:5; James 3:6).

The distinction between hades (the intermediate state) and Gehenna (eternal hell) is of importance, not only because it is necessary to the understanding of quite a large number of passages in the NT, but it may also prevent misconstruction and remove uncertainty as to Christ’s teaching with regard to the future state of the wicked. It also has important bearing upon the doctrine of “Christ’s descent into hell” (hades) and that of the intermediate state.

(Lots more, but I don't need to quote them all)

Hell is not annihilation; hell is everlasting.

We know God will use brimstone in hell. Hell is real and the unsaved will suffer there eternally.

It is probable that every city and town in Israel had a supply of sulfur on hand to start their trashheap fires and keep them burning.

Burning sulfur chokes people Eden. You're just being silly. Sulfur is smelly stuff, and it forms choking sulfur dioxide fumes: a whiff of the fumes from molten sulfur can choke you up pretty bad.

The New Testament even calls them "gehenna fire":

Matthew 5:22
But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire {gehenna fire}.

Matthew 18:9
And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire {gehenna fire}.

Mark 9:47
And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire {gehenna fire}.

You don't need to be "environmentally aware" to know that you're choking.

"Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah - from the LORD out of the heavens…" (Gen. 19:24)

And the ash and sulfur balls are still there at the Dead Sea. They weren't burned in Gehenna.

Burning sulfur, if they could even get that much sulfur, would be as much of a health hazard as a pestilence.
The population of the whole earth did not reach 1 billion people until 1830 A.D. So back then, from 1500 B.C. to the 1st century A.D., the population of the earth was too small for burning sulfur to be a health hazard, nor were they environmentally aware back then, plus the amount of sulfur needed to keep the trashheap burning was insignificant compared to potential pestilences arising.

As for your phrase "if they could even get that much sulfur", there are yellow balls of sulfur laying everywhere around the Dead Sea, especially around the southwest side of the Dead Sea, mixed in with the surface soil.

Taken from the internet:

"For the first time in modern history we have found round balls of brimstone, or nearly pure sulfur, embedded in an ashen area near the Dead Sea ..." (www.arkdiscovery.com/sodom_&_gomorrah.htm)

"Brimstone is an ancient term for sulphur. The alchemists considered sulphur the essence of combustion, because of its flammability--because it easily bursts into flame."

The Jerusalemites kept their trashheap burning very hot by throwing sulfur on the trashheap, to make sure that everything burned thoroughly to ashes, so that no pestilence could rise up from the trash in this Middle Eastern heat.
Burning sulfur, if they could even get that much sulfur, would be as much of a health hazard as a pestilence. Is this your made-up explanation of fire and brimstone? Or did you get it from AnswerBag?

Sulfur burns with a blue flame that emits sulfur dioxide, notable for its peculiar suffocating odor due to dissolving in the mucosa to form dilute sulfurous acid.

Inhaling sulfur dioxide is associated with increased respiratory symptoms and disease, difficulty in breathing, and premature death.

Sulfur dioxide emissions are a precursor to acid rain and atmospheric particulates.

What point are you trying to make here? That the KJV translated four different words as hell?

For example, one is left wondering how "hell" can be cast into the "lake of fire" -- (Revelation 20:14, KJV). It should also be noted that the KJV further confuses the issue by using the word "Hell" to translate other key biblical words (Sheol, Gehenna, Tartarus).

And lastly, there is a third Greek word, "tartaros", which the KJV translators of the Greek New Testament also translated as "hell". The Greek word "tartaros" is the Strong's Concordance number 5020, and is the place where the angels that sinned are chained:

2Pe 2:4 For 1063 if 1487 God 2316 spared 5339 not 3756 the angels 32 that sinned 264 , but 235 cast [them] down to hell 5020, and delivered 3860 [them] into chains 4577 of darkness 2217, to be reserved 5083 unto 1519 judgment 2920.

Strong's number 5020 matches the Greek ταρταρόω (tartaroō), which is translated as "hell" one time in the KJV New Testament.

The less often used Greek word that is also translated as "hell" by the KJV translators of the Greek New Testament is the Greek word "hades", which is Strong's Concordance number 86, or hades.

Mat 11:23 And 2532 thou 4771, Capernaum 2584, which 3588 art exalted 5312 unto 2193 heaven 3772, shalt be brought down 2601 to 2193 hell 86: for 3754 if 1487 the mighty works 1411, which 3588 have been done 1096 in 1722 thee 4671, had been done 1096 in 1722 Sodom 4670, it would have remained 302 3306 until 3360 this day 4594.

Mat 16:18 And 1161 I say 3004 also 2504 unto thee 4671, That 3754 thou 4771 art 1488 Peter 4074, and 2532 upon 1909 this 5026 rock 4073 I will build 3618 my 3450 church 1577; and 2532 the gates 4439 of hell 86 shall 2729 0 not 3756 prevail against 2729 it 846.

Luk 10:15 And 2532 thou 4771, Capernaum 2584, which 3588 art exalted 5312 to 2193 heaven 3772, shalt be thrust down 2601 to 2193 hell 86.

Luk 16:23 And 2532 in 1722 hell 86 he lift up 1869 his 846 eyes 3788, being 5225 in 1722 torments 931, and seeth 3708 Abraham 11 afar 3113 off 575, and 2532 Lazarus 2976 in 1722 his 846 bosom 2859.

Act 2:27 Because 3754 thou wilt 1459 0 not 3756 leave 1459 my 3450 soul 5590 in 1519 hell 86, neither 3761 wilt thou suffer 1325 thine 4675 Holy One 3741 to see 1492 corruption 1312.

Act 2:31 He seeing this before 4275 spake 2980 of 4012 the resurrection 386 of Christ 5547, that 3754 his 846 soul 5590 was 2641 0 not 3756 left 2641 in 1519 hell 86, neither 3761 his 846 flesh 4561 did see 1492 corruption 1312.

Rev 1:18 2532 I [am] he that liveth 2198 , and 2532 was 1096 dead 3498; and 2532, behold 2400 , I am 1510 alive 2198 for 1519 evermore 165 165, Amen 281; and 2532 have 2192 the keys 2807 of hell 86 and 2532 of death 2288.

Rev 6:8 And 2532 I looked 1492 , and 2532 behold 2400 a pale 5515 horse 2462: and 2532 his 846 name 3686 that sat 2521 on 1883 him 846 was Death 2288, and 2532 hell 86 followed 190 with 3326 him 846. And 2532 power 1849 was given 1325 unto them 846 over 1909 the fourth part 5067 of the earth 1093, to kill 615 with 1722 sword 4501, and 2532 with 1722 hunger 3042, and 2532 with 1722 death 2288, and 2532 with 5259 the beasts 2342 of the earth 1093.

Rev 20:13 And 2532 the sea 2281 gave up 1325 the dead 3498 which 3588 were in 1722 it 846; and 2532 death 2288 and 2532 hell 86 delivered up 1325 the dead 3498 which 3588 were in 1722 them 846: and 2532 they were judged 2919 every man 1538 according to 2596 their 846 works 2041.

Rev 20:14 And 2532 death 2288 and 2532 hell 86 were cast 906 into 1519 the lake 3041 of fire 4442. This 3778 is 2076 the second 1208 death 2288.

So there are 11 occurrences of the Greek word "hades 86" in the entire Greek New Testament, and the KJV translators translated all of them as hell".

Judge for yourself whether you think the word hades should have been translated in other words instead, from the above occurrences, if any.

NOTE that THESE 11 occurrences of the Greek word "hades" are THE ONLY OCCURRENCES of the Greek word "hades" in the ENTIRE Greek New Testament.

In the Strong's Concordance, the Greek word γέεννα (geenna), which is translated as "hell" in the KJV, occurs 12 times in 12 verses in the Greek New Testament.

Mat 5:22 But 1161 I 1473 say 3004 unto you 5213, That 3754 whosoever 3956 is angry 3710 with his 846 brother 80 without a cause 1500 shall be 2071 in danger 1777 of the judgment 2920: and 1161 whosoever 3739 302 shall say 2036 to his 846 brother 80, Raca 4469, shall be 2071 in danger 1777 of the council 4892: but 1161 whosoever 3739 302 shall say 2036 , Thou fool 3474, shall be 2071 in danger 1777 of 1519 hell 1067 fire 4442.

Mat 5:29 And 1161 if 1487 thy 4675 right 1188 eye 3788 offend 4624 thee 4571, pluck 1807 0 it 846 out 1807 , and 2532 cast 906 [it] from 575 thee 4675: for 1063 it is profitable 4851 for thee 4671 that 2443 one 1520 of thy 4675 members 3196 should perish 622 , and 2532 not 3361 [that] thy 4675 whole 3650 body 4983 should be cast 906 into 1519 hell 1067.

Mat 5:30 And 2532 if 1487 thy 4675 right 1188 hand 5495 offend 4624 thee 4571, cut 1581 0 it 846 off 1581 , and 2532 cast 906 [it] from 575 thee 4675: for 1063 it is profitable 4851 for thee 4671 that 2443 one 1520 of thy 4675 members 3196 should perish 622 , and 2532 not 3361 [that] thy 4675 whole 3650 body 4983 should be cast 906 into 1519 hell 1067.

Mat 23:15 Woe 3759 unto you 5213, scribes 1122 and 2532 Pharisees 5330, hypocrites 5273! for 3754 ye compass 4013 sea 2281 and 2532 land 3584 to make 4160 one 1520 proselyte 4339, and 2532 when 3752 he is made 1096 , ye make 4160 him 846 twofold more 1362 the child 5207 of hell 1067 than yourselves 5216.

Mat 23:33 [Ye] serpents 3789, [ye] generation 1081 of vipers 2191, how 4459 can ye 5343 escape 575 the damnation 2920 of hell 1067?

Mar 9:43 And 2532 if 1437 thy 4675 hand 5495 offend 4624 thee 4571, cut 609 0 it 846 off 609 : it is 2076 better 2570 for thee 4671 to enter 1525 into 1519 life 2222 maimed 2948, than 2228 having 2192 two 1417 hands 5495 to go 565 into 1519 hell 1067, INTO THE FIRE THAT SHALL NEVER BE QUENCHED.

Mar 9:45 And 2532 if 1437 thy 4675 foot 4228 offend 4624 thee 4571, cut 609 0 it 846 off 609 : it is 2076 better 2570 for thee 4671 to enter 1525 halt 5560 into 1519 life 2222, than 2228 having 2192 two 1417 feet 4228 to be cast 906 into 1519 hell 1067, into 1519 the fire 4442 that never shall be quenched 762:

Jam 3:6 And 2532 the tongue 1100 [is] a fire 4442, a world 2889 of iniquity 93: so 3779 is 2525 the tongue 1100 among 1722 our 2257 members 3196, that it defileth 4695 the whole 3650 body 4983, and 2532 setteth on fire 5394 the course 5164 of nature 1078; and 2532 it is set on fire 5394 of 5259 hell 1067.

In the King James Version (KJV), 12 occurrences of the English word "hell" are the Greek word "gehenna".

This Greek word "gehenna" was the Greek rendition of the "ge Hinnom", which was the "trashheap of Jerusalem, in the Hinnom valley on the south side of Jerusalem", which was known as "the valley of Hinnom", or the "ge hinnom" or the "ge-henna" in Jesus's time.

What makes it confusing is that the KJV translators also tranlated the Greek word "tartaros" and the Greek word "hades" into the word "hell".

The Greek word gehenna referred to the trashheap of Jerusalem in the valley of Hinnom on the south side of Jerusalem.

The Jerusalemites kept their trashheap burning very hot by throwing sulfur on the trashheap, to make sure that everything burned thoroughly to ashes, so that no pestilence could rise up from the trash in this Middle Eastern heat.

Joshua 15:8
And the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom to the south side of the Jebusite; the same is Jerusalem ...

When Jesus and the Holy Spirit used the word "gehenna", Jesus was always referring to the trashheap in the valley of Hinnom. And his whole audience knew that by that He meant to say, "in the same way will all things on earth to ashes" just as you do in your gehinnom or gehenna trashheap. Jesus will be sending all unbelievers to the gehennna trashheap whose fire no man can put out because God is kindling it.

Malachi 4:1
For behold, the day comes that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly, shall be stubble; and the day that comes shall burn them up, says the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

2 But to you who fear My name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in His wings; and you shall go forth and grow up as calves of the stall.

3 And you shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, says the LORD of hosts.

And now from the New Testament:

Matthew 13
41 The Son of man shall send forth His angels and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that offend and them who do iniquity;

42 And He shall throw them into a furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who has ears to hear, let him hear.

This "gehenna" type of "hell" is BY FAR the most frequent type of "hell" found in the New Testament. By using that word, Jesus and the Holy Spirit was saying to His listeners, "all unbelievers will end up on the gehenna trashheap like the one over there in the valley of Hinnom", or in the Greek that was also spoken in those days, "in the ge Hinnom".

In Greek, the word "ge" means "field" and "land" and "ground" and "country". Hinnom was the original owner of the "valley of the children of Hinnom" on the south side of Jerusalem. It was later used as the trashheap for Jerusalem where sulfur kept the trash burning perpetually, to prevent pestilences from rising from the trashheap:

Nahum 1:9
What do you imagine against the LORD? He will make an utter end; affliction shall not rise up the second time.

The gehenna fire from the LORD will do its work on earth, and no man will be able to quench it until it has done its work:

Matthew 13
41 The Son of man shall send forth His angels and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that offend and them who do iniquity;

42 And He shall throw them into a furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

NOTE that THESE 12 occurrences of the Greek word "gehenna" are THE ONLY OCCURRENCES of the Greek word "gehenna" in the ENTIRE Greek New Testament.
