I especially like definition 2).

Psalm 38:13
But I, as a deaf man, did not hear; and I was as a dumb man who does not open his mouth.

But this deaf man was not deaf, nor was he a dumb man. But like a deaf man, he acted like he had not heard, though he had heard.

And like a dumb man, he said nothing back, eventhough he was not a dumb man.

I also think that we as Christians can somewhat measure our progress in the Lord, by looking to what extent we still retaliate, or, if we have retaliated, how long it takes us to be friendly again ... a week? 2 days? a day? a few hours? always stays friendly, no matter what?

In evil incidents, am I deaf like one who cannot hear, and am I dumb like one who cannot speak?

love, Eden

Philippians 2:3 - 8 (NLT)
3 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.

5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.

6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

humble (lowly of mind) = poor in spirit; do good for others

meek (gentle) = harmless as a dove; do no harm to others

Very interesting. Moses is a great example of meekness. Would you say that Paul was meek?

I know that the fruit of the Spirit and the Beatitudes go hand-in-hand, and we cannot really live the Beatitudes until the Holy Spirit manifests His fruit in and through us. I know also that the Beatitudes build one upon the other.

With this in mind, what would you say is the difference between meekness and humility?

the difference between humility and meekness

Meekness

1) gentleness

2) You can take or absorb abuse, hits, blows;AND YOU DON'T RETAILIATE

like a puching bag

is Paul meek, yes

1 Corinthians 4:12) And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it

1) not retailiating against the enemy

2) enduring persecution, not striking back the Persecutors physically, nor with verbal assault.

I have been taught that God will bring down the New Jerusalem at the beginning of the millennium. I believe that the New Heaven and Earth will be made after the millennium. I do believe God will restore the earth to her beauty before the fall of man at the beginning of the millennium.
Of course what ever timing God uses it will be marvelous serving God and being in His presence.

carol, i agree there will be a new heaven and earth but not until after Yeshua reigns on this one for 1000 years.

It is after that, that God the Father Himself will come down to a new earth, bringing with Him the New Jerusalem.

Let us Look at the man Moses for meekness shall we?

Num 12:1 And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman.
Num 12:2 And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it.
Num 12:3 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)
Num 12:4 And the LORD spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out.

Observations

*) Moses didn’t speak a word during this confrontation
*) Moses did not speak in His defend when confrontation arose
*) Moses did not speak against them when confrontation arose
*) Moses did not strike at Miriam and Aaron
*) Moses did not get angry
*) Moses did not panic or get dismayed
*) Moses just absorbed what was spoken against him from Aaron and Miriam
*) God stood up for Moses in the time of his confrontation with Miriam and Aaron

2 main elements of meekness.

1) gentleness

2) You can take or absorb abuse, hits, blows;AND YOU DON'T RETAILIATE

Humility and meekness are two seperate things.

The majority of ones called christian are taught they are going to heaven or hell. So i guess the big question is-- which is truth?

Revelation 21:1 - 3 (NLT)
1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. 2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.

The first heaven and earth were prepared for the first man and woman and their descendants. God had readied everything for them when He placed them in the Garden. Unfortunately, our first parents sinned, ushering death and decay into God’s beautiful world. Creation is in bondage and travail (Rom. 8:18-23), and even the heavens “are not clean in His sight” (Job 15:15).

God has promised His people a new heaven and earth (Isa. 65:17; 66:22). The old creation must make way for the new creation if God is to be glorified. Jesus called this event “the regeneration” of the earth" (Matt. 19:28)

Besides, meekness is a fruit of the Spirit.

No, no, no. You misunderstood me, my friend.

I ment that we must let go of worldy concerns and things in our heart.

I didn't mean that if you have money you should give it all away to be humble.

I ment that you should not let worldy things rule your life and dominate your mind.

I think that part of being humble is letting the will of God dominate your life, and not letting our sin nature dominate our life.

To me, being humble is the practice of truly letting go of worldly things and concerns.

I know that we all have those concerns and ties to worldly things that is difficult for us to let go.

But as long as we practice and activly try to let them go, prehaps that is the same as being humble?

What do you think?

Matthew 5:5
Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.

We should recognize that, when Jesus presents meekness in Matthew 5:5 as a highly desirable quality, He prefaces it with "Blessed are the poor in spirit" (verse 3) and "Blessed are those who mourn" (verse 4). He places it within a context that contains qualities that are similar to meekness. Alexander MacLaren writes in his comments on verse 5, "[Meekness] is the conduct and disposition towards God and man which follows from the inward experience described in the two former Beatitudes, which had relation only to ourselves" (Expositions of Holy Scriptures, vol. 6, "St. Matthew," p. 130). In other words, meekness is the active fruit of the other two, but whereas being poor in spirit and mourning are both internal in operation, meekness is both internal and external in its execution in one's life. Though this is not a complete description, it lays a good foundation.

Godly meekness is impossible unless we first learn a just and lowly estimate of ourselves. We must become poor in spirit. We do this by coming before God in deep penitence and with a clear knowledge of the vast difference between ourselves and what He is and what He means us to be. Paul says in Romans 12:3, "For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith." While pride destroys self and others, humility serves and builds.

Mourning springs from a sense of sin, from a tender conscience, from a broken heart. It is a godly sorrow over our rebellion against God and hostility to His will. It is the agonizing realization that it was not just sin in general but our own sins that nailed Christ to the cross. Notice that Matthew 5:4 is in the present tense, meaning that mourning is not confined to our initial repentance—it is a continuous experience. The Christian has much to mourn. If his conscience is kept tender by an ever-deepening discovery of human nature's depravity, his sins—both of omission and commission—are a sense of daily grief. Paul writes in Romans 8:23, "[W]e ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body." He adds in Romans 7:24, "O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?"

At the same time, this does not mean a Christian lives his life with a hang-dog expression and attitude, or that he lives his life feeling that he is a dirtbag or sleazeball who is still mucking around in a moral septic tank. A Christian is also forgiven, cleansed, and justified by the blood of Jesus Christ. He has access to God the Father, is the apple of His eye and has an awesome hope before him. He has the Holy Spirit in him. He is a child of the great Creator. Christ died for him. A Christian has many reasons to feel a sense of exultation for what has been provided for him. An awareness of sin—as long as it is not allowed to become obsessive—will help him continue in a humble frame of mind by keeping pride in check, tempering his judgments, and allowing him to accept the events of life in a spirit that produces great contentment.

These qualities are produced when, with God's help, we rightly measure ourselves against the right standards—God and His law—rather than each other, and discover how much we owe to God's merciful grace. Anyone thus convicted and then forgiven and cleansed by Christ's blood is in the position to produce godly meekness.
