Proverbs 11:30: The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
So, it's blessings received by the righteous person by pleasing God.
Jesus spoke of his followers as branches in vital union with the central vine, Christ, who provides the nourishment and strength.

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, against such there is no law.
That is the Living Translation version. I remember it because of the catchy jingle. But the King James Version uses the word 'temperance' instead of self-control. But either way, this implies autonomy. In other words, self-control means self government. That, is a 'fruit' of the Spirit. I say it primarily for the sake of those who are scared that 'surrender' to His will means one becomes 'robotic'. One's fears in such case are unfounded.
