Explain the following scripture: a. Acts 16:16-18
By Evangelist Aleechea Pitts
The demon possessed woman in this passage of scripture spoke the truth while serving the devil. The devil himself can transform into an angel of light. (2nd Corinthians 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.)
The demon of divination enabled the woman to practice the art of prediction. She lost the ability when Paul cast the demon out of her. Mark 1:34 speaks of Jesus, “ And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.” The Bible warns us to give no regard to those who practice divination. (Lev 19:31 Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I [am] the LORD your God.) There is nothing religious or miraculous about it. This is the conclusion of the whole matter, 1 John 4:1-3 states "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God...”
Many of us perceive (to become aware of through the senses) like the woman at the well. She perceived that Jesus was a prophet because of what he had told her. Jesus was indeed a prophet but he was far more than that. It is important to have the gift of discerning spirits. Discern means to mark the difference. 1 Corinthians 2:14 states, “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” Our senses have to be trained to discern good and evil. (Hebrews 5:14) The secret of "senses trained to discern good and evil" is revealed in Hos.6:3, "Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord…" True discernment doesn't come from simply gaining knowledge. True discernment comes from walking in the light by faith.
