Brother, You did not fail! Not one life ever passes from this world that GOD does not allow to pass in HIS perfect time even if we do not think so or cannot understand the timliness of the passing.... no matter how untimely the passing seems.
You had an appointment to do a heroic thing and you did what you were called to do. Were you willing to risk all icluding your life for another? That seems to me to have been the question, and you answered it faithfully and without hesitiation. That is all...
John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
You were willing to do it for someone who you did not even know. That is not failure... not by a long shot! Dont take on more than was asked of you. God alone determins when any of us goes.
God Bless you for your courage and your willingness to do what ever was asked of you. Your testimony has humbled and blessed me.

even thou i failed
They gave me the The Navy and Marine Corps Medal. http://www.marine-family.org/corps/medals/history/nmcq.htm
my citation: For heroism while serving on board USS SAMUEL GOMPERS (AD 37) on 13 December 1977. Upon returning to his ship at Naval Station, San Diego, California at approximately 0340, Petty Officer Gainer observed a car drive from the quaywall and plunge into the water. He immediately dove into the water, swam to the sinking vehicle and attempted to effect a rescue. With complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, Petty Officer Gainer managed to free the driver from the car and started toward the safety of the quaywall with the struggling victim. Due to personal exhaustion however, the victim slipped from his grasp and sank beneath the water's surface. Petty Officer Gainer made numerous unsuccessful attempts to relocated the victim but the futility of the effort forced him to give up the search and he allowed himself to be pulled from the water. His courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
For the President,

My husband retired from the Navy about 3 years ago. He always had good service. I was in the Navy, too, for almost 7 years.

Hey! My dad was Army Air Corp.. my husbands' dad army, so we have to play this one too!
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord: He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps, They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps: His day is marching on.
I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel: "As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal; Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel, Since God is marching on."
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat: Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet! Our God is marching on.
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me: As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free, While God is marching on.

Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who didd'st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed Limits keep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea!
O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard And hushed the raging at Thy Word, Who walked'st on the foaming deep, And calm amidst its rage didst sleep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea!
Most Holy Spirit! Who didst brood Upon the chaos dark and rude, And bid its angry tumult cease, And give, for wild confusion, peace; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea!
O Trinity of love and power! Our brethren shield in danger's hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them wheresoe'er they go; Thus evermore shall rise to Thee Glad hymns of prase from land and sea.
