The kingdom is like...what did He buy?

The kingdom is like...what did the overcoming believers of overcoming faith in Heb11 give in order to obtain and maintain that overcoming faith? What about the apostles? All martyrs (witnesses)?

interesting answers. I was thinking more of, he sold or traded in all his "own filthy righteousness" for the free righteousness which is by faith in Jesus.

In this world that also manifests over time as abandoning worldly activities such as wordly movies, worldly books and worldly music, and the like, and trade them in for Christian music, Christian books and so on.

God bless, [Cross] BORN AGAIN

"God is still doing great things" (a Christian CD)

Hi Born Again.

As you know, Jesus is bringing before us the analogy of an earthly event to teach something spiritual.

He says the kingdom of heaven is like a man seeking goodly pearls. So before we attempt to answer the question “What did he sell?” I think we can come to a more realistic conclusion if we first attempt to answer the question what is he seeking? He says this man is seeking “goodly pearls,” in other words he is collecting pearls. Picture this man going out in the morning and finding another pearl to add to his collection and coming home over the moon with joy.

What are these pearls spiritually speaking? These pearls are gods, they bring him much joy and happiness in life. One thing about all the pearls he is collecting, is that although they sparkle and look good, yet they are perishable.

Then he goes out and finds one pearl that supersedes his entire collection, he is convinced this particular pearl is imperishable and worth much more than all the rest of his entire collection, so he trades them all for one pearl and that pearl is Christ.

He has now complied to the commandment,
Exo 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Hope that helps [Wink]

What did He sell?

Muthlabben comes immediately to my mind!!!

Parables are not easy, they are to be placed along side other sayings, as the term is employeed. They are not meant to be easy to understand, and certainly those who heard them were more familiar with the Hebrew customs and teachings than we could ever be, and yet, there is a way to seek and find. Again, it is not easy. Helps from the chapel of the open book;

"Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like unto a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, and, finding one very precious pearl, departing, he at once sold all things whatsoever he had and bought it"

Merchant. -- The word is epmoros in the original, giving us our emporium, and occurs five times in the N.T., once in the parable, and four times of the merchants connected with Babylon (Rev. 18.).

Pearls. -- These are mentioned in the N.T. nine times. Two of these occurrences are in the parable, and five are in the Revelation. The harlot is seen decked with precious stones and pearls, but after her destruction the new Jerusalem, the holy city, is seen with its foundation of precious stones, and every gate a pearl. Merchants and pearls are connected with the two cities, and the two systems, the one being the devil's parody of the other.

The N.T. word for a pearl is margarites. Another word, not found in the N.T., but closely resembling the Hebrew word translated "rubies," is the word pinna. The R.V. margin of Job 28. 18 gives "pearls" as an alternative reading. Bochart is very strong in his belief that the Hebrew word peninim (rubies) should be translated pearls. The price of wisdom (Job 28. 18; Prov. 3. 15) and the worth of a virtuous woman (Prov. 31. 10) are placed above the value of peninim or pearls.

Right down the ages since the time of Abraham there has been a faithful remnant. These will form one company at the end, and are spoken of as "holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling," "who died in faith, not having received the promise." Readers should turn to the following passages before going further, to learn more concerning this remnant according to the election of grace. Isa. 1. 9; 7. 3 (Shear-jashub, the name translated for us in x. 21 by the words "the remnant shall return"); Isa. 11. 11, 16; Ezek. 9. 4-6; 14. 22; Joel 2. 32 (compare the remnant on the day of Pentecost); Micah 2. 12; Rom. 2. 27; 11. 5.

The overcomers of the Apocalypse, the 144,000 sealed of the tribes of Israel, the various companies mentioned in Rev. 12. 17; 14. 1-5; 15. 1-3 and 20. 4 all seem to be part of this great company denominated by our Lord "The Pearl of Great Price." Pearls are compared with holiness in Matt. 7. 6; the partakers of the heavenly calling are called "holy brethren" (Heb. 3. 1), and "saints of the Most High" (Dan. 7. 22). Pearls are compared with wisdom in the O.T., and Dan. 12. 3 tells us that "they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament, and they that turn many to righteousness, as the stars unto the age and beyond." These are the seed of Abraham likened to the stars of heaven, the nation itself being likened to the sand of the sea shore. These wise ones "understand" and "instruct many" (Dan. 11. 33); they are subjected to tribulation (Dan 11. 35) before they enter their glory. Wherever we see this elect remnant we find tribulation and suffering.

When we read in the book of the Revelation of "The wife" and "The bride," we have the two companies again who are in view in these parables as the Treasure and the Pearl. Israel's relationship to God is that of a wife who, being unfaithful, has been put away, but the return of Israel is to be like the taking back of the penitent wife, nay, so great is God's grace and love that He says it will be "as a young man marrieth a virgin," even though in reality it will be the taking back again of an unfaithful wife (see Isa. 42. 4, 5 and Hos. 2. 19, 20, &c.). This relationship, which includes "all Israel," is brought before us in Rev. 19. as the marriage of the Lamb, whose "wife hath made herself ready."

After the thousand years' reign, and in connection with the new heaven and the new earth, we read, "And I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband" (Rev. 21. 2). In verses 9 and 10 we have this fact repeated. The inhabitants of this city are the partakers of the "heavenly calling," who, like Abraham, desired a better country, that is an heavenly, and for them God hath prepared a city. It was this heavenly calling (which must be distinguished from the super-celestial calling of the dispensation of the mystery), so plainly understood and believed by Abraham, that enabled him to be a stranger and a pilgrim on the earth, a sojourner in the land of promise as in a strange country, content with tents and no settled habitation, because he looked for a city which hath the foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

Israel viewed as a whole is likened to a treasure and a wife. The remnant (which will include believing Gentiles during the "Acts" period) are viewed as a precious pearl and a bride. We may set this out more clearly as follows:-

The Elect Nation as distinct from the Nation.

A treasure.
A wife.
Earthly calling, and city.
Seed like sand for multitude.

The Elect Remnant as distinct from the Nation.

A pearl.
A bride.
Heavenly calling, and city.
Seed like stars for multitude.

Such as are children of faithful Abraham, not only according to the flesh but according to the spirit, such constitute the bride and the pearl, an elect remnant out from an elect nation.

Once again we see how fully the Lord was meeting the disciples' need, by showing them the way in which God's purpose concerning Israel was to run its course, and how the very trials and hindrances would be made to contribute to the glorious end in view.

What did He sell? The secrets of the Son comes to mind,

Eph 3:3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,

Eph 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

Psa 8:6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
Psa 8:7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
Psa 8:8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
Psa 8:9 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!
Psa 9:1 <To the chief Musician upon Muthlabben, A Psalm of David.> I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works.

Now, the word “upon” is “al” and Muth is the first part of this joined word. In Psalm 46 we have “Alamoth”. So lets look at it.

Psa 46:1 <To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth.> God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Psa 45:6 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. [Heb 1]
Psa 8:5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. [Heb 2]

In the Greek version of the OT it has over these two Psalms the words “The Secrets Of The Son”. This is the Mystery of Christ; hidden in the OT, waiting to be revealed. It’s the word that “ages” and “forever” are based upon in the OT, something hidden and secret.

I believe he sold everything because he knew that what he was gonna get would be many times greater than what he already had.

Much like we as Christians know that what we get through Christs love is much greater than anything the world has to offer.

God bless
