What an utterly confused issue! (not to you directly)
First -the book is a thriller -fiction -though the author may be very sensitized to the issues discussed and knowledgeable.
Second -God has declared the end from the beginning -it's not up to Clinton, Obama, Bush or anyone else what happens, except that they might use their power to satisfy those things for which God is angry -and ONLY thereby avert disaster. For that matter, it's not ultimately up to men who our next president will be! If we understand that it is God's decision what happens, we might then focus on doing those things which might cause him to smile upon us! Otherwise, he has already written the who, what, where, why and when.
It is our evil that faces us -if we see to that we need not fear any enemy, as God would stand for us as in past times -our enemies would be driven from before us -even not with our sword and not with our bow -and any trouble would be far less than would otherwise be. Even the upright are persecuted without cause, and not all trouble is God's correction, but that is the issue -does God have issue against us?
It's not -necessarily- where we are -but what we do, how we do it and why we do it that matters -and especially at whose expense. Being wary is wise -but so is assuring that our own human rights record is spotless if we are going to accuse others, and being certain our motives are as selfless as we claim if we call ourselves liberators and listening to the people the government is for, by and of -here -and abroad as we seek to spread democracy -lest we be seen by God and the world to be hypocrites -and have all against us....
Even if one does not believe the following applies to the US, etc.. directly (it does), these are the types of things for which God does allow nations to be destroyed...
Isaiah 10
1Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed;
2To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!
3And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?
4Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. (etc...!!!!)
...Also, Israel(Judah) will soon be left out in the cold, so to speak -but as we do so, we will all face the same enemy.....(one most do not yet see at work)
Isaiah 9:21
Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
----Dan 4:17(in part) This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.......----
