At least it's not Monty Burns.

*** 't Sec of State Burns: Christians Lack Common Sense

By Bill Fancher
May 15, 2003

(AgapePress) - The Bush administration is being asked to fire one of its top state department officials even while the U.S. shuffles the leadership in post-war Iraq.

A well-known conservative evangelical is calling on the state department to fire one of its top officials over his criticism of Christians who support Israel. According to the Associated Press, Assistant Secretary of State William Burns told a meeting in Jerusalem last week that Christians who oppose the so-called "road map" for an Israeli-Palestinian settlement "lack common sense."

The Jerusalem Post said the Burns meeting involved members of the left-wing group Peace Now and officials of the Palestinian Authority. The Post reported Burns told them that "the common sense of all peoples will override the conservative and Christian viewpoints once they see the road map's potential."

Gary Bauer, of the group Campaign for Working Families, says Burns should be fired -- not only for insulting President Bush's most loyal supporters -- but also for having a fundamental hostility for the security of Israel. Bauer charges that Burns does not understand that believing Christians and Jews are not the real problem in the Middle East. The responsibility, he says, falls directly on Radical Islam.

Realignment in the Administration's Rebuilding Personnel
Meanwhile, in Iraq over the past week, key figures in the leadership team charged with rebuilding Iraq have been replaced. The shake-up reflects the Bush Administration's unhappiness with the lack of progress being made and feels a change in personnel will make a bit difference in the rebuilding efforts.

Heritage Foundation Middle East expert Jim Phillips says we must be patient as this rebuilding toward freedom play itself out. He says it will take a long time before Baghdad is transformed from the ravages of Saddam Hussein and the recent war to oust him from power.

"I think it is going to take a lot more time to build a stable and democratic Iraq than people generally realize," Phillips said. "After all, this isn't the first time that Iraq has been liberated and put on the path to democracy."

The British tried it first in 1917 and the nation went through a series of military coups until the Baath party took control in 1968. Phillips points out that Iraq's tumultuous history is against us.

"This is going to take many years," Phillips says, "not just months to build a stable, post-war Iraq."
