Near the site of the biblical city of Nineveh and the ancient tower of Babel, more than a dozen soldiers expressed the change in their lives.

CBN.com – For some soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division, it took a trip to the frontlines of war in Iraq for them to discover the true peace they had been looking for all along. With newfound faith in God, these brave defenders of liberty found a new kind of freedom, burying their chains of sin at the bottom of the Euphrates River.
On Easter Sunday, soldiers from the 101st Airborne made their pilgrimage. With their fellow soldiers standing guard, these men and women professed their faith in Jesus Christ, and decided a good place to be baptized was in the water closest to them, the Euphrates.

"I just wanted to get baptized," said Specialist Chris Pillow. "It’s another thing to get baptized in the Euphrates River, one of the most historical rivers, in biblical terms."

Near the site of the biblical city of Nineveh and the ancient tower of Babel, more than a dozen soldiers expressed the change in their lives.

"That old creature is going under water, but that which is coming up is going to be brand new — ‘I will be changed,’" their chaplain explained while standing the banks of the river.

And then, the baptisms began. "I baptize you Christopher Pillow in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit," he proclaimed.

Staff Sgt. Elva Smith said, "I figure it’s letting go of, I guess my ‘sinful ways’ is the best way to describe it, because I was embracing something that I know I shouldn’t have embraced a very long time ago."

And in the middle of a combat zone, these believers felt a profound peace and calm.

"I feel like I finally found peace," Smith said with tears rolling down her cheeks. "And it’s an amazing feeling. I’ve been lost for a very long time, and it’s good to finally feel calm."

For these soldiers of the 101st Airborne, it was an Easter Sunday like no other.

"Accepting God in the middle of war, it’s a good time to find him I think, because you never know what’s gonna happen next," Pillow said.
