NORFOLK, Neb. — Five people were killed in a bank robbery Thursday, and police have launched a manhunt for three suspects who drove away from the scene of the crime.

Police Chief Bill Mizner said four bank employees and a customer were killed at the U.S. Bank branch off U.S. Highway 81 in Norfolk. The robbery took place shortly before 9 a.m. CDT.

One person also was taken to the hospital with injuries.

Mizner said three men, described as Hispanics, fled on foot and stole a white 2003 Suburu with in-transit tags, rather than license plates, from a nearby residence.

Randy Volquardsen was working at the Carquest auto parts store across the street from the bank when the shooting happened. He said the southwest window of the bank was broken and appeared to have been shot out.

He said he did not hear gunshots.

Police cars, fire trucks and ambulances were at the scene, Volquardsen said.
