Israeli police captured two Palestinian terrorists today on their way to carry out a suicide bombing in central Israel. A bag containing more than 10 kilos (22 pounds) of explosives was found and detonated in a controlled explosion that was heard for miles (kilometers). Police say a bomb that size could have caused mass casualties in a crowded place like a bus or mall. The arrests came after security forces went on high alert, acting on intelligence warnings that a suicide bomber and an accomplice had crossed into Israel from Palestinian-controlled territory in Samaria. The terrorists were arrested in the Israeli Arab village of Kafr Kassem, northeast of Tel Aviv.

Israeli troops shot and killed two gunmen from the Islamic terrorist group Hamas today in the Gaza Strip. Hamas confirmed that two of its members fired an anti-tank missile at an army patrol, sparking a gun battle in which the attackers were killed. "We promise that the flag of jihad (holy war) and resistance will remain raised until the end of the occupation," Hamas said. The statement was in stark contrast to high expectations that Hamas will agree to a “cease-fire” later this week. Hamas terror chiefs are meeting with Egyptian officials in Cairo to finalize the agreement.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, who has been at the forefront of the cease-fire effort, met today in Gaza City with US envoy John Wolf. Wolf is responsible for monitoring implementation of the peace “roadmap.” US national security adviser Condoleezza Rice will arrive here this weekend for talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders aimed at giving the roadmap a boost.

Israel has indicted the Israeli Arab leader of the radical Islamic Movement for allegedly transferring more than 6 million dollars to Hamas. Sheikh Raed Salah and four other members of the Islamic Movement were charged with membership in a terrorist organization, contact with foreign agents, and laundering money to cover up the transfer of funds. The indictment underscores Israeli suspicions that the Islamic Movement has exploited the freedoms of Israel`s democracy to finance and support Palestinian terror. Members of the movement have threatened violent demonstrations if Salah is not released.
