A freighter carrying Scud-type missiles from North Korea has been seized off Yemen, Pentagon officials said last night.
The unflagged ship, which had at least 12 missiles hidden in a cargo of cement, was tracked for several days by American intelligence agencies after it left a port in North Korea. It was boarded on Monday several hundred miles south-east of Yemen by two Spanish warships.
The ship's destination was not immediately known but it appeared to be heading for Yemen rather than Iraq.
The discovery threatened to complicate American attempts to focus attention on Saddam Hussein. It is the latest in a series of signs that North Korea - the third member of President George W Bush's "axis of evil", after Iran and Iraq - is every bit Saddam's equal in the production and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
America, mindful of Japan and South Korea's concerns about the prospect of war on the crowded Korean peninsula, insists that Iraq and North Korea cannot be compared.
The seizure came as Donald Rumsfeld, the US Defence Secretary, toured the Horn of Africa to reinforce security links with fragile governments amid signs of an al-Qa'eda resurgence.
