Nancy Ghiotto, Daily Journal

November 20, 2002

Journal writer
CRETE -- Parents and the girls themselves will decide whether two girls elected as "Cutest Couple" at Crete-Monee High School will appear in a photo in the yearbook, Superintendent Roberta Berry says.

About 50 of the school's 1,500 students staged about a four-hour protest on Tuesday, expressing concern that the vote of the student body might not be honored.

They held up signs -- "Lesbians have rights too. Honk 4 Us. ... Support the Cause." -- for passing motorists on busy Exchange Street to read.

The Journal was prevented from talking to the students by a security officer who said it would be a distraction and danger so close to the street.

The demonstrators, who started around 10, were gone by 2-2:30. After school students approached by The Journal said they didn't know the girls and didn't have any comment on the matter.

Public Relations Director Sue Rossi explained that shortly after school starts in August, students vote for several honors for the yearbook. "The ballot for the cutest couple actually said, vote for one boy and one girl. This is what came back," she said.

A sign of the times?

"At any point in time, a high school is going to portray the perfect snapshot of what's going on in the country," Rossi said. "Any issue that deals with the public is going to come up with our students."

She believes this is the first time parental permission has been sought before publishing photos of honorees in the "Warriors" yearbook.

"It's private information pertaining to sexual preference and it's considered quite confidential," Rossi said. "It's been about a month since the award recipients and their parents have known, but we haven't heard anything."

Superintendent Roberta Berry sent a letter to the student body thanking those who took the time to express opinions on the matter. She plans to meet with students during lunch periods Thursday for those who would further like to discuss the recent winners of the cutest couple award.
