I have a question based on this proclomation of Jesus in scripture. What could Jesus be referring to that is finished? I believe something is finished because Jesus says it....but Im not so sure I agree with how some others view this proclomation of Jesus.....

I would like to note that at this point in time Jesus had not yet entered the Most Holy Place with His own blood....for He was still alive when He made that proclomation and there must be death of a testator before a testament to be in force. The Heavenly sanctuary was yet to be purified.

So what was finished? What may Jesus have meant by those words just before His last breath?

I'd like to hear others views on this. With love in Christ, Daniel

Though you might like this:

'It is Finished!'

I have finished the work which You have given Me to do —John 17:4

The death of Jesus Christ is the fulfillment in history of the very mind and intent of God. There is no place for seeing Jesus Christ as a martyr. His death was not something that happened to Him— something that might have been prevented. His death was the very reason He came.

Never build your case for forgiveness on the idea that God is our Father and He will forgive us because He loves us. That contradicts the revealed truth of God in Jesus Christ. It makes the Cross unnecessary, and the redemption "much ado about nothing." God forgives sin only because of the death of Christ. God could forgive people in no other way than by the death of His Son, and Jesus is exalted as Savior because of His death. "We see Jesus . . . for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor . . ." ( Hebrews 2:9 ). The greatest note of triumph ever sounded in the ears of a startled universe was that sounded on the Cross of Christ— "It is finished!" ( John 19:30 ). That is the final word in the redemption of humankind.

Anything that lessens or completely obliterates the holiness of God, through a false view of His love, contradicts the truth of God as revealed by Jesus Christ. Never allow yourself to believe that Jesus Christ stands with us, and against God, out of pity and compassion, or that He became a curse for us out of sympathy for us. Jesus Christ became a curse for us by divine decree. Our part in realizing the tremendous meaning of His curse is the conviction of sin. Conviction is given to us as a gift of shame and repentance; it is the great mercy of God. Jesus Christ hates the sin in people, and Calvary is the measure of His hatred.

Hi David,
Thanks for the reply. I was actually thinking right along those lines...that Jesus was saying that the mission that He came to accomplish was finished. He had done the will of the Father.
He was prepared as a suitable sacrifice for our redemption. With love in Christ, Daniel

Yes, oneinchrist, I think that Jesus just meant that He had completed the work assigned to Him on earth.

John 19:30
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, He said, It is finished: and He bowed His head, and gave up the spirit.

John 17:4
I have glorified You on the earth: I have finished the work which You gave Me to do.

Strong’s Concordance below:

John 19:30 When 3753 Jesus 2424 therefore 3767 had received 2983 the vinegar 3690, he said 2036 , It is finished 5055 : and 2532 he bowed 2827 his head 2776, and gave up 3860 the ghost 4151.

2Timothy 4:7 I have fought 75 a good 2570 fight 73, I have finished 5055 [my] course 1408, I have kept 5083 the faith 4102:

John 17:4 I 1473 have glorified 1392 thee 4571 on 1909 the earth 1093: I have finished 5048 the work 2041 which 3739 thou gavest 1325 me 3427 to 2443 do 4160 .

Strong’s 5055 ("finished"):

1) to bring to a close, to finish, to end
a) passed, finished

2) to perform, execute, complete, fulfil, (so that the thing done corresponds to what has been said, the order, command etc.)
a) with special reference to the subject matter, to carry out the contents of a command
b) with reference also to the form, to do just as commanded, and generally involving the notion of time, to perform the last act which completes a process, to accomplish, fulfil

3) to pay
a) of tribute

Jesus had thus done all of the above things when He said, IT IS FINISHED--5055.

With love, Eden
