Daniel 2:40
King James Version (KJV)
40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.
Daniel 2:40
Expanded Bible (EXB)
40 Then there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron [C perhaps the Greeks or the Romans]. In the same way that iron crushes and smashes things to pieces, the fourth kingdom will smash and crush all the other kingdoms [C these kingdoms might not be specific kingdoms but symbolic of a series of unnamed oppressive nations].

Iron is strong and more common than silver and gold. This kingdom is Rome which was across the world but then soon became weak. Iron is a very though metal but it is also easily rusted. The kingdom of Rome was strong but when it became weak it was very weak as if the iron of the kingdom had rusted. Now all kingdoms or nations that have arrived since modeled at Rome. The Byzantines modeled after Rome and were consider the second Rome. Russian Empire was biggest during USSR time of the Soviet Union but they referred to themselves as Czars after the Roman Caesar. Hitler called his reign of Nazis the Third reign referring to Rome the first and the Byzantines the second. The English empire which was during the 1700 modeled itself after Rome. The eastern empires model themselves after other eastern empires though but, to the western world there was none better than Rome.
