The name JESUS is not Greek, it's English. The Greek name is Iesous, the Latin name is Iesus, and the English is Jesus. David did not know any of those 3 languages because they had not been invented yet by 1100 B.C. (or so) when David lived.

AMEN!

David had strong faith.

1 Samuel 17:46 - 47 (ESV)
46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

The Old Testament types and numbers are very interesting as long as people stay away from NEWAGE KABBALAH NUMEROLOGY and such.

Here's a link to Spurgeon on David as a type of Christ and David's battle with Goliath

Hi Carol,

I enjoy reading your posts as well.

Your question,
quote:
because I can't understand David honoring a Greek name long before the Greeks came into power. In fact, how would David even know the Hebrew name of the Christ?
David was stepping out in faith. He wasn’t depending on his own understanding or his own senses, he was totally dependent on the Lord and therefore he was being guided according to the providence of God.

God makes no mistakes and used the situation to symbolize how JESUS would bruise the head of the serpent. David may not have been aware that his five stones corresponded to the five-letter name of Jesus, but he would have known the truth of Gen 3:15.

Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

David had his loins girt about with truth.

Jesus said, I am the way, the truth , and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6.

We worship an omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent God who is in total control of all things.

God bless.

We can learn a lot from David and how he dealt with the wiles of the enemy.

David had his sling and picked up five stones because he knew that Goliath had four brothers that might also try to attack him.

He had enough to deal with every giant and more than enough to deal with the giant at hand.
He also chose five stones because he had confidence that the five-letter word J E S U S, Jesus, would bruise the head of the serpent and is sufficient to deal with any attack of the enemy and more than sufficient to deal with individual attacks.

David chose the five stones carefully. They were smooth stones and when he would sling them; there would not be any resistance by the wind. They would spin toward the target irresistibly.

Five in scripture is the number of grace. For David, the sling and the five stones were the whole armour of God.
The sling representing the word, and the five smooth stones representing,
1 The loins girt about with truth,
2 the breastplate of righteousness;
3 the feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
4 the shield of faith,
5 the helmet of salvation,
Ephesians 6:14 to 17

All of these combined were for David’s battle with the enemy, but one stone was enough to paralyse the giant. We who have faith in God have one stone that has rendered our enemy the devil powerless to destroy us spiritually, and that stone is Christ. He has bruised the head of the serpent and no enemy giant was able to resist Him.

We as believers begin at #5. We take the helmet of salvation, and when we have the helmet of salvation the enemy can’t attack our head and mind. Most of us are content with this one piece of armour, not realising the importance of the other four. When we face difficulties where is our shield of faith? In our witness do we prepare sufficiently? Is our life showing the righteousness of Christ? Is our message based on the full truth of the word?

When the Lords servants have on the full armour and catapult Christ from the sling of the word He will take down the giants facing God’s elect irresistibly and those who are elect will make their calling and election sure by repenting of their sins and calling on the Lord for salvation.

Isaiah 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.

Man is a sinner. He is rotten with sin and unable to cure his pitiful condition. Man in his natural state is totally depraved of any spiritual faculties.

Spiritually speaking, man in his natural state is unable to see and unable to hear and unable to talk and unable to walk. Indeed, he is nothing more than a dead corpse, and unless there is a miracle of grace from the Lord to quicken him and bring him to life he will die in his sins and suffer in hell for all eternity.

Man in his natural state believes in his own armour. He believes he has enough to get the victory through his own efforts, but in reality he is in opposition to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Through the preaching of the servants of the Lord, the sling of the word, and the five smooth stones of the whole armour of God, can cause the sinner to lay down his puny arms of rebellion, and declare himself bankrupt of anything he can do in the battle for his soul, and repent and accept the once for all sacrifice of Christ as his substitute.

Then he too can take up the sling of the word and the five smooth stones of the whole armour of God and fight not for the victory, but in the victory.

Strong's Concordance

Ephesians 6:11
Put on 1746 the whole armour 3833 of God 2316, that 4314 ye 5209 may be able 1410 to stand 2476 against 4314 the wiles 3180 of the devil 1228.

Strong's Concordance

wiles 3180

3180. methodeia, from a compound of 3326 and 3593 (compare "method"); travelling over, i.e. travesty (trickery):--wile, lie in wait.

This word 3180 only occurs twice in the NT, at Ephesians 6:11, and at:

Ephesians 4:14
That 2443 we [henceforth] be 5600 no more 3371 children 3516, tossed to and fro 2831 , and 2532 carried about with 4064 every 3956 wind 417 of doctrine 1319, by 1722 the sleight 2940 of men 444, [and] cunning craftiness 1722 3834, whereby 4314 they lie in wait 3180 to deceive 4106.

Thunderz7 [thumbsup2]

Satan is also called the Adversary. He opposes us in our walk with God. He uses many tricks and devices. One of his tactics is to send a "spirit of heaviness" upon us. When we recognize this we are able to over come him easily.

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles (methods - cunning, crafts) of the devil.

The Spirit of Heaviness

Isaiah 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

SPIRIT is "ruwach" This is the same word used for all spiritual life and beings including God. It is used also of breath and air. It does not mean "a feeling" or attitude.

· This is not mans own spirit, which is called "the spirit of man"

· This is not God's spirit, nor can it be from God

· It is a demonic spirit.

HEAVINESS means " somewhat dark 5, darkish 1, wax dim 1, smoking 1, heaviness 1; 9 dim, dull, colourless, be dark, faint :". It is a word used in the bible to describe:

· the effect of a plague darkening the skin,
· the dimness of the eyes in old age,
· a fire gone out of a flax (reed), still smoking and not extinguished.
· a heavy spirit.

THE EFFECT OF A SPIRIT OF HEAVINESS

· It darkens our countenance: Our hearts are down cast. This spirit brings a "heaviness" over us..
· It dims our vision, robs our hope. The room may actually look darker.
· It brings a heavy, oppressive feeling. It quenches our faith.
· It may come over many at once , like a plague. It can be like a cloud, hanging over a place.
· It causes us to isolate, it steals our love, makes us feel alone.

OVERTHROWING THE SPIRIT OF HEAVINESS

1. Recognize it. This is not you, you are a child of God. This is not God's will for you. Romans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

2. Don't believe anything negative you think under it's influence. Accept no criticism of yourself or others. 2 Corinthians 10:5 We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

3. Put on the Garment of Praise (Is 61:3) This literally means to be "Wrapped Up In Praise" God has given it to you to put on. Take action including adoration, thanksgiving, singing and glorifying. Get loud, get definite, aggressive! Wrestle it down. (Eph.6) and break into the anointing.

FOLLOW THESE STEPS AND

you will get a victory over this tactic of the Adversary.

one of satan's wiles involving the section of scripture about the armor of GOD,
is to try to make Christians think their breastplate has no back on it.

A breastplate covers the entire torso front, back and sides, proecting all the vital organs in the trunk of the body.

Yeshua told satan to get behind me,
do you think your GOD would leave your back uncovered for such enemies to sneak attack you?

YHWH doesn't want us running like cowards from satan;
we are to stand, in the full armor;
but praise GOD our backs are covered!

Also armor is heavy,
it can be very hot,
it can be very cold,
it can rub the skin raw.
garments are worn under armor to protect the skin from rash, heat, cold!
The Romans that Paul were familiar with wore a tunic under their armor,
like a big T shirt,
almost to the elbows,
nearly to the knees.

So what do we need for our under garment?
The garment of praise
Isaiah 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

 - The Wiles Of The Devil

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Eph. 6:11)

Our English word “wiles” is generally used to express deception through trickery and includes all the methods that would be part of that. It has to do with cunning or skill applied to no good purpose. The word ruse is a synonym with stress on the creation of a false impression.

But when definitions seem inadequate, what helps is personification; a living example of the thing under consideration. The Bible teaches, the devil – as he works his craft against us – personifies wiles. He is the master of wiles.

He lies to us, wants to trap us, discourage us and snare us. He will do anything he can do with cunning satanic variety to weaken us and destroy us. He goes to work daily to produce discouragement, confusion, indifference and imbalance. He is our chief enemy, but deals in wiles and stratagems. So here is a “briefing” (to borrow military intelligence terminology). Four things to watch for:

1. The devil exaggerates the pleasures of sin while minimizing the true nature and outcome of sin. Of Moses the Holy Spirit said: He “refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,” (Heb. 11:24,25). Observe that phrase: “enjoy the passing pleasures of sin.” The devil approaches us with exaggerated emphasis on the pleasure we can enjoy if we will sin. He is asking us to invest in something with promise of immediate return – but without telling us about the risk, the outcome, the ugly side! The devil is counting on the fact we will see the fun, the pleasure – the joy of satisfied appetite – and jump at that, acting impulsively. If you stop and think; if you inquire; if you look deeply and consider consequences – you frustrate the wiles of the devil. The devil wants us to act on the immediate pleasure of the tempted behavior.

Therefore, Satan is annoyed when we stop to think; when we inquire about some tempted behavior; when we think in terms of long-term consequences - - when we study and pray and consider if something is right or not! Satan exaggerates the immediate gratification, while minimizing the true nature of the sin. The bait looks good, but when you take that bite you have taken in the ugly poison of sin.

2. The devil sees an opening into our lives through emotions or mood (Eph. 4:26). People have said to me: I knew I shouldn’t be drinking, but I was depressed. I know I’m married, but this other woman made me feel so good. Sure it’s wrong to lie, but I was under such pressure! It was a sin to treat my brethren the way I did, but I was so mad!

What’s happening? The devil is watching. When we fall into certain moods or we are overcome by various kinds of emotions, the enemy steps in to defeat us; to lead us into sin. The wiles of the devil include this cunning ability to find openings through our moods and emotions. Paul said, “ ‘Be angry, and do not sin:’ do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil (Eph. 4:26).” When I’m angry and I take that anger with me into the next day, and carry it along with me for weeks and months and years … I might as well wear a bull’s eye target. The devil will find me and seek and entrance into my heart for his evil purpose and to my downfall. Use the Word of God and prayer – to take a careful inventory of your moods; your emotions; the grudges you carry. Expel the hurt feelings you can’t seem to turn loose of; the habitual, destructive thoughts you entertain. The devil can use those things to slowly erode your character and to lead you into sin.

3. The devil will use people to lead us astray. Not long into His public work our Lord warned men of men. He told people to be careful about people! He knew the devil can use people to lead us astray. So Jesus said, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves,” (Matt. 7:15). When He sent His disciples out He said, “Beware of men,” (Matt. 10:17). Jesus wanted us to know this: the devil can use people to lead us astray. Through words of invitation into sin; through false teaching, or through subtle influence he can defeat us. One of the wiles of the devil is to use people to corrupt us.

Read 1 Tim. 6:1-5. In a situation where there are teachers not consenting to wholesome words, the devil discovers his advantage. When men who preach and teach do not maintain loyalty to “the doctrine which is according to godliness,” the devil can step in through that entrance and seduce many. When we accept, endorse, consort with false teachers, that indifference plays right into the hands of error and the devil’s purpose. Let’s observe: Paul describes the risk to Timothy then he tells Timothy: “From such withdraw yourself.” Too much is at risk to play around with men like this. It is one thing to be patient and kind and do what we can to work with people. But when corruption is evident; when men are at work who are destitute of the truth, we cannot just let error have its’ way. “From such withdraw yourself.” Paul warned the Colossians – “I say this so that no one will delude you with persuasive argument,” (Col. 2:4).

4. The devil is the master marketing agent; he packages sin in neat, attractive bundles (Heb. 3:12,13). What if someone came to you with a garbage bag; trying to hand to you a garbage bag. As soon as they hold it out you can smell the contents. You can hear the buzz of maggots. You can see the leaking liquid. Are you going to take the hand-off?

But what if someone comes to you, neatly dressed with a pleasant smile. And they hand to you a beautiful package, like it was professionally wrapped at Dillards. It has matching bow and ribbon; perfectly wrapped and absolutely beautiful. Your reaction would not be the same – as with the garbage bag!!

The devil is the master market executive. He knows how to package sin so that it doesn’t look like anything bad. This is part of his deceptive essence. For instance – in the lust of the eyes – the devil seeks to present sin to us IN A NEAT PRETTY PACKAGE so that our first reaction is to look; to admire; to want; to take.

How can we stand against such a wily enemy?

10Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.14Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints,” (Eph. 6:10-18)
