2 Corinthians 3:3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

Ezekiel 11:19 And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:

Ezekiel 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

THE TWO TABLES OF STONE and THE FLESHY TABLES OF THE HEART

Israel arrived at mount Sinai, and at some point Moses goes up the mountain and Moses received two tables of stone WRITTEN BY THE FINGER OF GOD:

Exodus 19
1 In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai.

2 For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount.

3 And Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;

Exodus 31
18 And when He had made an end of communing with him {Moses} upon mount Sinai, He gave Moses two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

Then in Exodus 32, the people below in camp have persuaded Aaron to make a golden calf:

Exodus 32
1 When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.

7 And the LORD said to Moses, Go, get yourself down; for thy people, which thou brought out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves.

15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand; the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.

16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

When Moses and Joshua got near the camp, they heard the noise of the people celebrating and Moses threw the tables of stone with God’s writing and broke them:

Exodus 32
19 And it came to pass, as soon as he {Moses} came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot and he threw the tables out of his hands and broke them beneath the mount.

OKAY. Now the two tables of stone which were “written with the finger of God” are BROKEN.

Then later in Exodus 34, God tells Moses to HEW TWO MORE TABLES OF STONE just like the first” and “bring them up the mountain”:

Exodus 34
1And the LORD said to Moses, Hew yourself two tables of stone like the first; and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which you broke.

2 Be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount.

4 And he {Mosess} hewed two tables of stone like the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning and went up unto mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.

Now note that in Exodus 34:1 above, the LORD said that Moses had to hew the two tables of stone, but that the LORD WOULD WRITE ON THEM again, as on the first two tables of stone:

Exodus 34
1And the LORD said to Moses, Hew yourself two tables of stone like the first; and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which you broke.

But instead in Exodus 34:27-28, Moses hewed the two tables of stone, and the LORD told MOSES TO WRITE the ten commandments on the two tables:

Exodus 34
27And the LORD said to Moses, You write these words down: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.

28 And he {Moses} was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.

Okay, apparently the LORD changed His mind about who was going to write the commandments on the two new tables of stone. And so Moses came down with the two tables of stone on which MOSES had written the ten commandments:

Exodus 34
29 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.

We will now FAST FORWARD some 40 years later, to Deuteronomy 5 … Israel has left mount Sinai and Israel is now camped on the east side of the Jordan, opposite Jericho, preparing to take Canaan.

But first, Moses gave one last speech to Israel, and in that speech, Moses does not mention that the two tables of stone that Israel now has, are the two new tables of stone on which MOSES himself wrote the ten commandments.

Instead, Moses ONLY REFERS to the two tables on stone that THE LORD HAD INSCRIBED WITH THE FINGER OF GOD:

Deuteronomy 5
1 And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them.

2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.

3 The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.

4 The LORD talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire,

5(I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to shew you the word of the LORD: for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying,

6 I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

7 Thou shalt have none other gods before me.

(And then in vv.7-21 follow the rest of the commandments.) Then Moses said:

Deuteronomy 5
22 These words the LORD spoke to all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and He {the LORD} added no more. And He {the LORD} wrote them in two tables of stone and delivered them to me.

Now, I assume that Israel had KEPT the PIECES of the FIRST wo tables of stone which were written by the finger of God, eventhough they were broken, and that Israel had put them up some place. For it seems inconceivable to me that the pieces of those first two tables of stone written by God Himself would have been thrown away.

And so it is probably reasonable that Moses would ONLY refer to the first, original two tables of stone which were written by the finger of God eventhough they were now broken, instead of referring to the second set of two tables of stone on which MOSES had written the ten commandments, since all Israel must have known that God Himself had inscribed the commandments on the first two tables of stone.

Deuteronomy then continues:

Deuteronomy 9:9
When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water:

Deuteronomy 9:10
And the LORD delivered to me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.

Deuteronomy 9:11
And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the LORD gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.

Deuteronomy 10:1
At that time the LORD said to me, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first, and come up unto me into the mount, and make thee an ark of wood.

Deuteronomy 10:3
And I made an ark of shittim wood, and I hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in my hands.

1 Kings 8:9
There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.

FAST FORWARD to the NEW TESTAMENT, where the tables of stone are mentioned once more in the context of CHRISTIANS:

2 Corinthians 3:3
Forasmuch as you are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but {written} with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

So what do you suppose was written on the fleshy tables of the heart? THE TEN COMMANDMENTS.
