Son Of God movie in theaters February 28, 2014!

Now, the larger-than-life story of The New Testament gets a larger-than life treatment in the stand-alone feature SON OF GOD.

Told with the scope and scale of an action epic, the film features powerful performances, exotic locales, dazzling visual effects and a rich orchestral score from Oscar®-winner Hans Zimmer.

Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado portrays Jesus as the film spans from his humble birth through his teachings, crucifixion and ultimate resurrection. It marks the first motion picture about Jesus’ life since Passion of the Christ, released ten years ago.

As with all movies that tell us they are "Biblical", I take that with a grain of salt until I see it myself.

So far I have heard that this movie, like most others, is not Biblical, but entertaining. When creative license is involved, truth often goes by the way side.

So don't go into it thinking its accurate or you may be disappointed.

Let me know what you think after you see it.

Well, another way to look at it is would you rather support a film like Son Of God (even if the director invokes artistic license at times.)

Or would you prefer to support a film like Devil's Due... (It's part Rosemary's Baby, part Omen, and part Blair Witch Project.)

I certainly would support a wholesome movie over some trashy devil, zombie, flick.

But to be honest, I do not really attend movies as a general rule until all the critiques are out or until they get to "Red Box".

[Smile]

So I guess my dollar support will wait until then.

Suppose you have a friend, neighbor, co-worker, family member, or loved one who was sitting on the fence, or perhaps simply hungering for more about Jesus...

Would you not invite them to go see the movie together?

Or perhaps you'd tell them to go see, but you'd rather not because of what you've heard about it.

Then if they go and see it and they come back to tell you how moving and powerful it was... Would you say to them that the movie really wasn't worth your time; it has a few inaccuracies...

Id never tell a person to go see it as if sending them to a movie done by Hollywood was going to somehow make them believe.

I leave that up to God.

Here is my thinking of movies, and books for that matter. If they are presented as fiction, than I take it as fiction. if they promote it as factual and true, then you can be darn sure I will know if it is simply because I know Gods Word.

If I found it to be not totally scriptural, Id tell the person. I did this for the ladies in my bible group when I was leading a study with them. When I got to parts that I knew were assumptions and not biblical, Id tell them what I thought and why and then let them make up their own mind.

I hope the movie we speak of here is good. id love to see people come away from it saying.. Wow, that was wonderful. Id love to see unbelievers watch it and say.. wow, that almost makes me want to become a Christian.

but for me personally, I do not like it would Hollywood promotes a movie as being biblical and then set out to change it to their own story; making it less believable and untrue.

I don't like it at all when people mock my God and lie about Him or His word.

But that how I feel. You are of course to go and see. I will see it when it comes out in red box or free online.

So you wouldn't go to the movie with someone even if it could be used as a launch pad (afterward) to share your faith and talk about the Bible?

I agree that a Christian movie is better than the satanic entertainment so popular these days. BUT if you take a seeker to an inaccurate movie, first you have to explain all the things in the movie that are wrong before you can try to offer them a true version, and the visual and auditory impact of the movie is going to make a stronger impression than someone simply talking to them.

So, IMHO, it would be better to start with a movie like "The Hope" that tells the true story, and then when they understand the truth, they and you can venture into the creative distortions if you still want to. [hug]

When is "The Hope" playing in theaters this month?

Look, I know someone who has difficulty reading through and understanding the Bible. But she thoroughly enjoyed the series about the Bible on TV. While the show wasn't absolutely perfect, it did help her. The Son of God movie is done by the same people, so I expect some of the same criticisms. However, I do think it could be used as a springboard for conversation.

I'm not seeing any problem with taking a seeker to see the movie, but the way in which the after-movie conversation goes is very important...

If you go with a fellow believer, maybe you both get something out of dissecting each and every scene (I don't know)... I mean, nitpicking about everything from words spoken or not spoken, merging of scenes, or things put in or left out... On down to complaining about eye color, clothing and hair style, accents used by the actors, and the authenticity of props...

But if you go with a seeker, I would not recommend regurgitating a large list of every little last flaw. Once you start down that road, there is no end to it. It may even open up the door for the age old criticism about "hypocrisy and Christians", and then you are likely to lose the person.

I think the important thing would be to make sure the person understands the overall message of the gospel and how it's being presented in the movie and individual scenes. What it means and how it applies to them personally.

The Hope is available on DVD, and you can watch it online for free at

I grew up watching "The King of Kings". I felt a deep sense of love and faith in Christ. Others watched that movie and felt nothing.

But when I began Bible Studies I realized that I had faith in the Jesus of the movie, and I hardly knew the Jesus of the Bible.

God certainly can use the "Son of God" movie to reach out to people. The Holy Spirit can speak to our hearts at any time.

But no actor can portray the qualities of God, however sincere and talented he might be. And no movie can replace the very Word of God, illuminated by the Holy Spirit.

Movies are wonderful, and I love them. But they are made for entertainment and profit; they are not a substitute for the Truth.

Oh, I agree with you that movies can be a good aid in teaching, but any portrayal of Jesus by an doesn't compare with the real person. However, when you're like the lady I know and you have a hard time reading through and understanding the Bible, there aren't too many other options...

I heard the movie "Son Of God" is based on the gospel of John. About 10 years ago, there was another movie based on the gospel of John, aptly named "The Gospel Of John".

It should be interesting to see how the two films compare with one another.

"Son of God", is merely the New Testament section of the "Bible" series as presented on the History Channel.

It is interesting that "Son of God', and the "Noah" movies are both coming out, both filled with Biblical inaccuracies, at about the same time that "God Is Not Dead" will be playing in theaters, on March 21st, which is a much truer Christian perspective and will be a much better witnessing tool.

We have a real enemy of the Bible, and all he has to do is twist and manipulate just a little to send folks off course.

Apparently "God's Not Dead" is not without it's flaws and unbiblical teaching either...

This movie review from AnswersinGenesis points out that while the film is well made and there are several positive things about it, these are all overshadowed by a failure to acknowledge God’s Word and character as the foundation of the Christian worldview.

Answers In Genesis: God's Not Dead

This movie review at Creation.com points out a major flaw in the movie is it's weak apologetics. They warn that any Christian who relies on the points made in the film in a debate will likely have a difficult time winning their argument. Also, many of the characters (including Christians) are stereotypically portrayed, but with critical errors.
