Jesus told him, “ I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me."

In John 18:38, Pilate responds to Jesus’ statement that He was born into the world to bear witness to the truth and that those who are of the truth hear His voice, by asking a haunting question: “What is truth?”

So much is said in so few words. It’s a very good and deep question. Pilate clearly knew the truth of Jesus’ innocence and appealed to the crowd for reason (John 18:38; 19:4; 19:6; 19:12). Pilate also knew the truth that a dangerous mob threatened civil control for which he was responsible (bad career move).

Chief priests and other instigators knew in truth their charges of insurrection against Caesar were tailored to force Pilate’s decision (John 19:12). They clearly knew the intricacies of their religious law (John 18:28; 18:31; 19:31).

They all knew a lot of truths, but did they have any wisdom? Having knowledge of the truth is necessary, but only reverence for and obedience to the truth is wisdom. Truth by definition has to be absolute. It cannot be altered, as were the charges against Jesus which migrated from blasphemy to government insurrection. Knowledge will allow mocking and hypocrisy of the truth. What were they trying to accomplish except the execution of Jesus that they claimed their law prevented them from doing? Who was it that was really threatening insurrection and rioting? They knew the truth, but they were disobedient and even mocked it.

James 2:19 “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe and shudder.” Head knowledge is not enough.
