VOM NEWS, Bartlesville--VOM has just learned that Parvez Masih, the for committing blasphemy, was attacked in his prison cell last week.

Apparently the Christian Masih entered into a heated dialogue with his Muslim cellmate who assaulted Parvez with a drinking glass. Masih suffered wounds to his eye as a result of the attack and his cellmate allegedly tore Parvez’s Bible during the assault incident.

Officials at the Sialkot jail immediately removed the cellmate from Masih’s cell to separate the two prisoners.

Masih is accused of violating sub-section C of Pakistan’s rigid Law 295, blasphemy against the prophet Mohammed. Parvez Masih was the headmaster of a successful Christian school in a village not far from the city of Lahore.

Muslims residing in the village had pressured Masih to hire Muslim teachers. Parvez refused, explaining that it was a Christian school and only Christian teachers would be hired. He assured Muslim critics that Islamic studies would continue to be a part of the religious instruction program at the school.

One day, four students approached Parvez and began asking him questions about Mohammed and the prophet’s nine-year-old wife, Aesha. According to his family members, Parvez instructed the boys to raise any questions about Islam or the prophet Mohammed with their religious leaders. Two of the boys testified that Parvez had committed blasphemy against Mohammed. Radical Muslims then demanded his arrest and charged him with violating Law 295.

Parvez's brother claims that radical Muslims encouraged the boys to question Masih and then give false testimony against him. He says Muslims in the village were jealous of the school's success and Parvez's prominent standing in the community.

“The Pakistani jailers did the right thing when they immediately removed Parvez’s attacker from the cell,” said VOM spokesman Gary Lane. “But we urge the prison warden and the Pakistani government to take better precautions to assure that Parvez Masih is not attacked again. Only fellow Christian prisoners should share a cell with Parvez.”

Parvez Masih faces possible execution if convicted of violating law 295-C.

VOM urges Christians to pray for Parvez, that his wounds will heal quickly, that he will grow stronger in the Lord as a result of the attack, and that he will be protected from future dangers. Pray that his cellmate and jailers will come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
