Persecuted Church

Sudan

Last year, John Kuol was with a group of people heading to Nimule, South Sudan, when they were attacked by a militia group supported by the Islamic government of Sudan. The vehicle John's party were travelling in was burned and a priest died in the blaze. John fled the scene but was shot in the leg. After being shot, he lay perfectly still, hoping the militia soldiers would think he was dead. One of them shot John in his other leg and another fired two bullets in his arm. Fortunately, he survived the attack and was taken to a hospital run by Voice of the Martyrs (VOM). Please pray for John and the VOM medical staff working in South Sudan. Also pray that Christians in Sudan will gærow strong in their faith.

Colombia

Archbishop Isaias Duarte Cancino was gunned down by two men in Cali, Colombia March 16. The archbishop had just completed a marriage ceremony and was leaving church when he was shot numerous times. Reasons for the murder are uncertain but the archbishop was openly opposing the drug barons and the rebels in Colombia. He had been threatened numerous times and had requested protection from local police but had been denied. Please pray for safety for the Christians in Colombia and for those who stand against the country's corruption and violence. Pray that many will come to Christ, who don't know him.

Pakistan

Schoolteacher Parvez Masih has been accused of violating subsection C of Pakistan's rigid Law 292: blasphemy against the prophet Mohammed. Parvez was the headmaster of a successful Christian school in a village not far from Lahore. Muslims in the village pressured Masih to hire Muslim teachers butÈ he refused, explaining that it was a Christian school and only Christian teachers would be hired. Later, he was accused of blasphemy and was arrested. When he appeared in Court last March he was weak and feverish. He has been facing harassment at the hands of prison officials and other prisoners and has not been well fed. Please pray for justice for Parvez Masih.

Turkmenistan

Shageldy Atakov, has spent three years in a Turkmenistan prison because of his Christian witness. In January, he was released from prison unexpectedly, one year before his four year sentence was up. He recently told a visitor that he has no intention of stopping his work for God. Shageldy is thankful for Christians around the world who prayed for him and wroëte letters on his behalf. "The Lord provides for me," he said. It has been reported that police are still watching him and his family. Paul wrote to Timothy that "all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will endure persecution." Pray for protection for Shageldy and his family and that his ministry in Turkmenistan will bear much fruit for Christ.

Ethiopia

Muslims in Ethiopia rioted last March as they demanded the death of a Muslim convert who is now a Christian evangelist. Gureta Hammed was beaten so severely by a mob, when it was reported that he was involved in translating the Bible into the language of the Afar tribe, that he ended up in hospital. It was following his hospitalization that the riots broke out. Evangelical Christians in Ethiopia are facing growing pressure and persecution. Christ promised His followers that they would, suffer just as He suffered. Please pray for Gureta Hammed and his ministry in Ethiopia.
